Dutch Harbor report

From the local police blotter:

Assault, Dec. 16 — Fisherman reported being assaulted by fellow crew while at sea, with the result that he was unconscious for several minutes and woke to multiple chipped teeth and a possible broken nose. An Alaska State Trooper took charge of the investigation due to the assault having occurred outside of the city's jurisdiction.

Theft, Dec. 17 — Caller reported his hamster had been pinched, taken from its cage inside a parked vehicle while the caller was inside Safeway. A short time later, the caller reported his rodent, apparently not stolen after all, had been enticed back to its home by a trail of food.

Trespass, Dec. 19 — Kaleinainoa Asentista, 28, of Anchorage, was charged with criminal trespass after he was found inside a UniSea bunkhouse, harassing two UniSea employees.

From the local police blotter:

Assistance rendered, Dec. 9 — Officer helped an Alyeska security officer escort an extremely intoxicated man, who had passed out in the break room, back to his own room.

Motor vehicle accident, Dec. 9 — A vehicle mysteriously ended up on the rocks near Little Priest Rock. The vehicle owner, who is not allowed to drive, refused to provide information about the identity of the friend to whom he had lent his vehicle, and stated only that his friend was uninjured. Under investigation.

Harassment, Dec. 11 — Another woman reported receiving obscene phone calls from the sexual deviant who has contacted numerous other women in the community. Under investigation.

Disorderly conduct, Dec. 14 — Officer arrived at the scene of a fight between two drunken men, one of whom received a bloody nose as a result, and found both drunks sprawled in the snow. After extensive conversation with the two drunks, the officer determined that neither participant wished to press charges.

Assault, Dec. 15 — A minor brawl erupted at the Harbor View bar involving a wedding party. A few minor injuries were reported, yet none of those involved wished to pursue charges.

Homer fisherman gets court date in Cordova

On 12/10/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Neal Reutov, 22, of Homer, for commercial fishing during a closed period. The F/V Contour was observed by state aircraft fishing during a closed period on 5/21/12. Arraignment scheduled for 1/16/12 in Cordova District Court.

Juneau fisherman nets $3,000 fine, forfeits fish

Location: Juneau
Type: Sentencing — commercial fish closed period
On 12/6/12 Aaron C. Place, 39, of Juneau, pled guilty to one count of operating a commercial gillnet during a closed period in District 11B south of Juneau. Place was fined $6,000 with $3,000 suspended and placed on probation for two years. Place also was ordered to forfeit just over $1,150 worth of illegally taken fish.

Dungeness crabber charged at Ketchikan

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Ketchikan
Type: Retain undersized Dungeness crab
On 12/14/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, cited David Vest, 36, of Ketchikan, for retaining commercially harvested undersized Dungeness crab, failing to complete a commercial fish ticket upon landing Dungeness, and unlawfully possessing undersized Dungeness. Vest was issued a summons to appear on 12/26/12 in Ketchikan District Court for arraignment.

Haines fisherman charged with double violation

Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 11/29/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers issued Wayne Chambers, 46, of Haines, two summonses for commercial fishing during a closed period. Chambers was observed fishing during a closed period on July 8 and 10 in Lynn Canal north of Point Bridget. He was given a court date of 12/20/12 in Juneau District Court.

Geoduck, sea cucumber cases result in fines

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Ketchikan
Type: Conviction
On 5/8/12 Le Jiayong, 57, of Ketchikan, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, on 19 counts of falsifying commercial fish tickets and unlawful possession of commercially taken geoduck clams. Le was cited after investigation revealed he had purchased commercially taken geoducks from four fishermen and provided false weights on Alaska Department of Fish and Game fish tickets. Investigation by Ketchikan and Klawock Wildlife Troopers found that Le misreported the actual weights of clams and failed to report clams that had been harvested in excess of trip limits. On 10/25/12, through a plea agreement made with the Ketchikan District Attorney's Office, Le had 18 charges dismissed and pled guilty to one count of falsifying fish tickets. Le was fined $250 and placed on a year's probation.

Type: Conviction
On 4/10/12 Le Jiayong, 57, of Ketchikan, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, for returning 22 commercial fish tickets later than the seven-day requirement. On 10/25/12, through a plea agreement made with the Ketchikan District Attorney's Office, Le had 21 charges dismissed and pled guilty to one count of failing to return fish tickets in the time required. Le was fined $2,500 and placed on a year's probation.

Type: Convictions
On 10/1/12 Matthew R. Pressly, 48, of Ketchikan, and Gregory S. Shaw, 34, and Samantha M. Pressly, 24, both of California, were cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, for commercial fishing for sea cucumbers in closed waters. They were cited after troopers observed the F/V Lorelei commercial diving for sea cucumbers in closed waters of Trollers Cove on the east side of Prince of Wales Island. Investigation revealed the vessel had harvested 1,395 pounds of sea cucumbers from closed waters. The state seized the load of sea cucumbers valued at $5,580. On 10/19/12, through a plea agreement made with the Ketchikan District Attorney's Office, the three pled guilty to one count of commercial fishing in closed waters. Each defendant was fined $1,000 with a $500 suspended, and placed on a year's probation. Also, the proceeds of the seized sea cucumbers were forfeited.

Sportfish guide in trouble over claims of tuna, whale and other exotic catches on Kasilof River

Type: Logbook violation
On 12/10/12 the Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Soldotna issued a summons to Matthew P. Terry, 21, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., for failure to complete logbook as required by Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Terry submitted freshwater logbook pages that indicated he had taken the following species from the Kasilof River: Chupacabra, Tuna, Jack Beluga and Blue Whales. Bail was set at $210 or optional court appearance into the Kenai District Court within 30 days.

Dutch Harbor report

From the local police blotter:

Suspicious person, Dec. 3, 1146 hours — Caller reported a tall man carrying a buoy, an activity which he found suspicious. Officers did not locate the buoy-sporting suspect.

Assistance rendered, Dec. 5 — Two men who had fallen, hurt themselves and were quite cold flagged down a police officer and requested a ride back to their vessel, stating they had been unable to flag down a taxi. The officer provided courtesy transport.

Found property, Dec. 6 — A kayak, on Summer Bay Road.

Public safety, Dec. 7 — Weather advisory issued after the National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning.

Trespass, Dec. 8 — Caller asked police to remove a woman from his residence, and told the responding officers that the woman never leaves after he invites her to his house. Officers suggested that perhaps he should stop inviting her. The woman left without incident.

Two accused of exceeding geoduck limit

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Craig
Type: Overlimit commercial geoduck clams
On 12/6/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Klawock Post, cited James Alexander, 53, of Seattle, for harvesting geoduck clams on 11/15/12 that exceeded the fishery limit set by an Alaska Department of Fish and Game emergency order. Arraignment set for 1/11/13 in Craig District Court.

On 12/6/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Klawock Post, cited Desi Mangini, 25, of Silverdale, Wash., for harvesting geoduck clams on 11/1/12 that exceeded the fishery limit set by an Alaska Department of Fish and Game emergency order. Arraignment set for 1/11/13 in Craig District Court.

Petersburg seiner pleads guilty, nets $1,000 fine

Location: Juneau
Type: Sentencing — commercial fish closed waters
On 11/29/12 Jeremy C. Jensen, 38, of Petersburg, pled guilty to one count of operating a commercial salmon seine during a closed period in District 11A north of Juneau. Jensen was fined $3,000 with $2,000 suspended and placed on probation for two years. The violation occurred 7/19/12 during the salmon seine fishery near Amalga Harbor.
