On 6/26/14 Jerold L. Vantrease, 57, of Homer, was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers for commercial fishing during a closed period in the Naknek area aboard the F/V Ruby. Arraignment set for 7/10/14 in Naknek District Court.

On 6/23/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet in waters closed to commercial fishing in Main Bay. Investigation revealed the vessel was the F/V Natural Gift, operated by Robert L. Nelson Jr., 52, of Soldotna. Arraignment set for 7/31/14 in Anchorage District Court.

On 6/23/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet in waters closed to commercial fishing in Main Bay. Investigation revealed the vessel was the F/V Break Away, operated by Anthony Matveev, 29, of Wasilla. Arraignment set for 8/1/14 in Anchorage District Court.

On 6/23/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet in waters closed to commercial fishing in Main Bay. Investigation revealed the vessel was the F/V Matrix, operated by Vlasy Kutsev, 23, of Anchorage. Arraignment set for 8/1/14 in Anchorage District Court.

On 6/26/14 Tomas Pstross, 46, of Washington, was cited for operating a commercial salmon drift gillnet within 60 fathoms of a setnet in Falls Bay. Arraignment set in the Anchor age court.

On 6/26/14 Kaban Backlund, 21, of Moose Pass, was cited for fishing a commercial salmon drift gillnet within 60 fathoms of a setnet. Arraignment set in the Anchorage court.

Sitka man falsified salmon delivery, troopers say

Type: File false fish ticket
On 6/27/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, cited Eric C. Vanveen, 42, of Sitka, after an investigation showed he delivered king and coho salmon caught under another commercial fisherman's permit. Vanveen, owner of the F/V Zip, claimed the salmon as his own on a fish ticket submitted to the processor. Vanveen also was found to be in possession of less than an ounce of marijuana during the investigation. He was charged with one count each of filing a false fish ticket, unlawful practices and misconduct involving a controlled substance. Arraignment set in Sitka District Court. Additional suspects have been identified and the investigation continues.

Wrangell crabber cited over small Dungeness

Type: Undersized Dungeness crab
On 6/20/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted Richard Phillips, 28, of Wrangell, on the F/V Carolyn Ann. Investigation revealed Phillips was commercial fishing for Dungeness crab and was in possession of 78 undersized crabs. Phillips was issued a summons to appear in Wrangell District Court for arraignment.

Two Dungeness crabbers cited, gear seized

Location: Juneau
Type: Commercial fish closed waters
On 6/26/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Juneau Post, inspected commercial Dungeness crab gear in Bridget Cove belonging to the F/V Aaralyn. Investigation revealed the permit holder and captain, Stewart Vick, 34, of Anchorage, had fished for Dungeness crab inside the closed waters of Bridget Cove. Troopers seized the gear that was in closed waters and later contacted Vick, who was issued a summons to appear in Juneau District Court.

On 6/26/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Juneau Post, inspected commercial Dungeness crab gear in Bridget Cove belonging to the F/V Camelot. Investigation revealed the permit holder and captain, Joshua Conn, 35, of Juneau, had fished for Dungeness crab inside the closed waters of Bridget Cove. Troopers seized the gear that was in closed waters and later contacted Conn, who was issued a summons to appear in Juneau District Court.

Cordova man gets jail in reckless boating case

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Type: Conviction — bench trial
On 6/27/14 Rodger Lee Koechling, 74, of Cordova, was convicted after a three-day bench trial of reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and reckless operation of a marine vessel. This case stemmed from an event on the Eyak River where Koechling used his 30-foot commercial bowpicker to recklessly scare and intimidate four other individuals (one 8 years old) who were fishing from a 15-foot skiff. Koechling was given 700 days in jail with 649 days suspended. The judge expressly related that this case was not about sportfishing versus commercial, but community condemnation and deterrence, and that this behavior presented a significant and exceptional risk to the occupants of the other vessel.

Troopers cite two Cordova driftnetters, seize fish

Location: Main Bay, western Prince William Sound
Type: Illegal driftnet operation
On 6/19/14 Brian Shaw, 49, of Cordova, was cited for operating a commercial salmon drift gillnet too close to a setnet. After receiving multiple complaints that Shaw was operating his driftnet in an illegal manner, stakeout operations were conducted and documented Shaw fishing illegally. Shaw's fish were seized and arraignment was set in Anchorage court.

On 6/19/14 Randy Merritt, 49, of Cordova, was cited for operating a commercial salmon drift gillnet too close to a setnet. After receiving multiple complaints that Merritt was operating his driftnet in an illegal manner, stakeout operations were conducted and documented Merritt fishing illegally. Merritt's fish were seized and arraignment was set in Anchorage court.

On 6/21/14 Steve Vican, 39, of Cordova, was cited for commercial fishing in closed waters. Vican was operating a drift gillnet within 500 yards of a designated salmon stream, which is closed to commercial salmon fishing. Arraignment set for 9/2/14 in Anchorage court.

On 6/20/14 William Cook, 61, of Oklahoma, was cited for commercial fishing in the closed waters outside the Eshamy District. Arraignment set for 9/9/14 in Anchorage court.

On 6/12/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Paul N. Mach, 76, of Seattle, for commercial fishing during a closed period. The citation was a result of trooper observations during the 2013 fishing season. Arraignment set for 6/18/14 in Naknek District Court.

Dutch Harbor report

From the local police blotter:

Suspicious person, May 26 — Officers contacted an individual causing a disturbance at a local drinking establishment. The individual was warned against such maleficent behavior.

Ambulance request, May 27 — Ambulance responded to a report of an individual having been attacked by an eagle.

Suspicious activity, May 29 — Complainant reported what he believed to be fraudulent activity in regards to his attempt to sell some fishing vessel equipment.

Assault, June 3 — Officers responded to a report of a fight aboard a processing barge. Both combatants were contacted and neither wished to discuss the issue with police. Their employment was terminated and they were removed from the vessel.

Suspicious activity, June 3 — Officers investigated a report of a dangerous situation that occurred a month prior. It was reported that a crane picked up a 40-foot container while it was still attached to the chassis, lifting the chassis and truck off the ground. Information was passed on to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Drunk disturbance, June 6, 0200 hours — Officers contacted two individuals who appeared to be involved in a heated debate about who was manlier. The two were separated and it was found that no crime had been committed.

Trespass, June 6, 0244 hours — A three-month trespass was issued by a local business to one of the participants in the above-mentioned alcohol- and testosterone-fueled confabulation.

Animal, June 6 — Officers responded to assist in a report of a fox chasing children in the playground. The Vulpes lagopus had fled the area prior to officers arriving.

Peters, 63, of Haines, was cited for commercial trolling during a closed period. Arraignment set in Sitka District Court.

Gillnetter accused at Cordova of illegal fishing

On 6/3/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet in waters closed to commercial fishing. Investigation revealed the vessel was the F/V Lady Lori operated by Brian Lee, 59, of Sutton. He was issued a summons to appear for arraignment on 6/18/14 in Cordova District Court.
