Sand Point, King Cove groundfish harvesters cited

Type: Illegal groundfish pot
On 3/21/11 Danny Cumberlidge, 36, of Sand Point, was cited by Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers for commercial fishing as the skipper and permit holder aboard the F/V Sea King with a groundfish pot having a tunnel eye opening perimeter greater than 36 inches. A court date was set for 4/12/11 in Valdez District Court.

On 3/18/11 Bill Sager, 52, of King Cove, was cited by Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers for commercial fishing as the skipper and permit holder aboard the F/V Pacific Quest with a groundfish pot having a tunnel eye opening perimeter greater than 36 inches. A court date was set for 4/26/11 in Valdez District Court.

Sitka man charged with boating under influence

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Sitka
Type: BUI
On 3/29/11, at 2100 hours, Walter C. Pasternak, 61, of Sitka, was arrested by troopers from the patrol vessel Enforcer for operating a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol. Pasternak was booked at the Sitka jail and then released with a summons to appear on 4/5/11 in Sitka District Court. Pasternak's boat, the F/V Christi-Rob, was released to a family member.

Troopers ticket cod fisherman near Chignik

Type: Operating unlawful gear for groundfish
On 3/7/11 Kodiak Wildlife Troopers issued a citation to Benjamin T. Allen, 32, of Port Angeles, Wash. Allen was commercial fishing with Pacific cod pots with tunnel eye openings larger than 36 inches. Allen was given a court date of 4/13/11 in Naknek District Court.

Trespass, March 22 — David Wayne Harrell Jr., 23, was arrested for criminal trespass after UniSea security officers discovered that he had entered a UniSea bunkhouse after fighting outside. Harrell had previously been advised not to return to UniSea property.

Harassment, March 24 — Processing plant employee reported being in fear for his life due to threats from his neighbors, one of whom he had heard through the wall questioning whether he was still alive. An officer responded and learned that one neighbor did not like the complainant. That neighbor was told not to talk to the complainant anymore.

Troopers arrest drunken man selling halibut

Type: Disorderly conduct
On 3/21/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Klawock Post, contacted an intoxicated male for selling subsistence halibut outside the Klawock AC Market. The contact led to the arrest of Mitchell H. Carle Jr., 33, for disorderly conduct. He was transported to the Craig jail and will appear in Craig District Court.

More charged at Dutch for lack of crew license

On 3/27/11 Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers issued citations to Virginia Martinez, 51, of Fresno, Calif.; Bobby Tubera Yesa, 31, of Everett, Wash.; Thanh Ngoc Pham, 55, of Burien, Wash.; and Justin Hayes Skalsky, 26, of Kalispell, Mont., for not possessing a 2011 Alaska commercial fishing crewmember license while crewing onboard a commercial fishing vessel. Vessel captain Adam Johnathan Loff, 42, of Henderson, Nev., was issued a citation for employing unlicensed crewmembers. The fine is set at $250 per person.

Sand Point cod fisherman cited on buoy violation

On 03/04/11 Kodiak Wildlife Troopers issued a citation to William N. Dushkin Jr., 28, of Sand Point, for commercial fishing a Pacific cod pot with buoys that were displaying more than one vessel's Alaska Department of Fish and Game number. Dushkin was given a court date of 04/12/11 in Valdez District Court.

Troopers issue tickets, seize crab pots at Nome

Type: Winter crab fishery violations
Alaska Wildlife Troopers conducted a patrol of the Norton Sound king crab fishery from March 18 through March 23. Several violations were discovered which resulted in 15 pots being seized and 10 citations issued. Violations were for failure to obtain a subsistence permit, failure to mark subsistence pots, failure to properly mark commercial pots, improper commercial pot configuration and inadequate bio-escape mechanism. Citations were issued to Nome residents Caleb Weaver, Fred Tocktoo, Tony Shelp and Obie Simonis. Anyone missing pots is encouraged to contact Alaska Wildlife Troopers to determine if any of the pots seized for being unmarked belong to them.

Sitka halibut skipper accused of permit violation

Type: Permit required to possess commercially caught fish
On 3/22/11 Kenneth J. Rear, 39, of Sitka, attempted to land IFQ-caught halibut without having a halibut endorsement on the permit card he was landing the halibut under. Rear is also required to have a halibut endorsement on his permit card due to the fact that he is a hired master for the permit he was fishing under. Rear was given a mandatory court date of 4/5/11 at Sitka District Court.

On 3/22/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, cited Edwin H. Laity, 39, of Sitka, for possessing more than 2,000 pounds of sea cucumbers during a fishing period on 10/7/10. Laity was issued a summons to appear for arraignment in Sitka District Court.

Domestic disturbance, March 15 — Officers responded to a report of a possible domestic assault at a UniSea bunkhouse, and learned that one roommate, trying to get something from her locker, pushed another roommate out of the way.

Fire response, March 19 — Aqueous oozing activated automated alarms at an airport.

Public safety, March 19 — Caller reported a guy line for one of the towers on Haystack had snapped in the wind. An officer advised the tower owner about the problem.

Public safety, March 19 — Unalaska Department of Public Safety issued a high-wind advisory regarding NOAA's high-wind advisory.

Traffic roads, March 19 — A stop sign was blown down by high winds.

Public safety, March 19 — Officers secured various pieces of debris as they flew from one part of town to another.

Environmental, March 19 — Three shipping containers toppled next to a bunkhouse. The bunkhouse was evacuated soon thereafter.

Traffic roads, March 19 — A runway gate broke after a strong gust of wind. A DOT employee indicated it was likely that this would not be the only runway gate to break this night.

Environmental, March 19 — A finger of the C-dock at the small-boat harbor tore loose from the main gangway, with a vessel still attached to the broken section of dock. Officers were able to temporarily secure the vessel until the boat owners arrived.

Traffic roads, March 20 — Officer cleared a small rockslide, caused by the incessant wind and rain, from the roadway.

Public safety, March 20 — Unalaska Department of Public Safety issued a high-wind advisory regarding NOAA's high-wind advisory.

Assault, March 20 — Officers responded to what was reported as a fight between a number of men at a bunkhouse, but which was later determined to be nothing more than drunken stumbling, which had resulted in some minor injuries to one inebriate.

Two Sitka salmon trollers accused of illegal fishing

Type: Commercial fish closed waters
On 3/20/11 at approximately 0734 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers observed the F/V Lady Linda operating salmon power troll gear in closed waters west of the winter troll line at Cape Edgecumbe. The vessel was subsequently contacted and Mark L. Danielson, 49, of Sitka, was cited for commercial fishing in closed period/closed waters. Arraignment is set in Sitka District Court.

On 3/20/11 at approximately 0731 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers observed the F/V Charisma operating salmon power troll gear in closed waters west of the winter troll line at Cape Edgecumbe. The vessel was subsequently contacted and James S. Dicicco, 46, of Sitka, was cited for commercial fishing in closed period/closed waters. Arraignment is set in Sitka District Court.

On 3/17/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Klawock Post, contacted Kelly Durgan Sr., 50, of Craig, skipper and permit holder on the fishing vessel Satellite, while delivering commercially caught halibut to Absolute Fresh Seafoods. Durgan failed to fill out his International Pacific Halibut Commission logbook as required. He was issued a mandatory summons to appear in Craig District Court.

On 3/16/11 Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers cited Flavio Chavez, 41, of Shoreline, Wash., for commercial fishing without having a 2011 commercial fishing crewmember license in his possession. The fine is set at $250.

Traffic crime, March 8 — Forklift operators moving 50-foot-long conveyor belts across Ballyhoo Road created unsafe driving conditions for other motorists. A company representative was warned about the practice and advised to obtain oversize/overweight permits for such moves in the future.

Public safety, March 10, 2352 hours — An all-hands call-out of fire, EMS and police responded to the Unalaska Department of Public Safety to prepare for possible community evacuation in case tsunami danger for this area, following the 8.9 earthquake in Japan, escalated. Based on the information available and the existing tsunami advisory, an evacuation was not called for. Public Safety personnel remained ready for immediate deployment until after the initial wave arrival time (~0230) as a precaution. Residents are reminded of the Public Safety information hotline at 581-6080 for the most up-to-date information. Those who want e-mails or messages sent to a cell phone and/or computer can sign up for information at www.nixle.com.

Fire response, March 11 — EMS and fire personnel responded to the Kloosterboer cold storage facility, where a poorly contained burn had allowed a fire to start in the tundra 100-150 feet up the side of a cliff.

Civil, March 11 — Caller reported he had tripped over his new roommate's suitcase and could tell by the sound that the bag was full of illegal drugs. Officers responded and found that the caller no longer cared about the suitcase but really wanted his roommate to sleep on a bed rather than the couch.

Public Safety, March 12, 0207 hours — A tsunami advisory was canceled.

Ambulance request, March 13 — EMS personnel assisted a man who had injured his leg onboard a fishing vessel.

Two geoduck harvesters charged at Craig

On 3/12/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Klawock Post, summonsed two permit holders from the fishing vessel Sea Shell, Brian H. Zwick, 41, and Jesse M. Hoyt, 35, both of Ketchikan, on two counts each of the following: harvest of geoducks in closed waters, unlawful use of dive gear, and making a false statement on an Alaska Department of Fish and Game fish ticket. The charges stem from a three-week investigation by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers. Zwick and Hoyt are to appear for a mandatory court arraignment in Craig District Court.

Crab skipper, crew in a pinch over small Tanners

Type: Undersized Tanner crab
On 2/25/11 Hoonah Wildlife Troopers cited 23-year-old Juneau resident and permit holder Barry Moala, who was taking undersized Tanner crab aboard the F/V Lovey Joann. Troopers also cited four crewmen: David Hammonds, Carling Cadiente, George Lindoff and Norval Nelson III. During the offloading of the crab, troopers discovered that 99 crab were undersized, which equated to approximately 12.6 percent of the vessel's load of Tanner crab. An arraignment date is set for March 9 in Hoonah District Court.

Trespass, Feb. 27 — Officer issued a trespass advisement to a former employee who was no longer welcome at a local processing plant.

Trespass, March 3 — Jonathan Culverhouse, 28, was charged with criminal trespass after UniSea security found Culverhouse in their galley several days after he had been issued a trespass advisement.

Domestic disturbance, March 3 — A man reported finding a bag of garbage on his bed when he woke up this morning. Officers discovered that the man and several of his roommates have a history of creating petty problems with one another. No charges were filed.

Drunk disturbance, March 4 — Police responded to the Spit Dock after a taxi driver reported what sounded like a fight in progress, to find that the commotion on the dock concerned a drunken man who had fallen into the water as he was being helped from one boat to another. Two other men had entered the water to find and rescue the first. The victim was towed to safety by one of the rescuers after an officer located him clinging to the side of a vessel.

Assist other agency, March 6 — Assistance with a Coast Guard investigation.

On 3/3/11 Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers also issued a citation to the master of the vessel, Ole Knotten, 52, of Youngstown, Ohio, for employing an unlicensed crewmember onboard his vessel. The fine for each individual is $250.

On 3/2/11, at approximately 1530 hours, Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers issued citations to William Owen Taylor, 44, of Centralia, Wash.; Victor Velazquez Garcia, 32, of Woodland, Calif.; and Katrina Rae Sutor, 41, of Edmonds, Wash., for commercial fishing without having a 2011 commercial fishing crewmember license in their possession. The fine is set at $250 per person, to be paid to the Unalaska District Court.

Southeast crabber ticketed for lack of buoy ID

On 2/24/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers aboard the patrol vessel Moen inspected commercial Tanner crab gear of the fishing vessel Loyal Lady and observed several buoys without the required Alaska Department of Fish and Game identification tags. On 3/2/11 James Seymour, 34, the permit holder on the F/V Loyal Lady, was issued a summons by Petersburg Post Alaska Wildlife Troopers. Arraignment is scheduled for 4/7/11 in Petersburg District Court.

Hatchery vandals wipe out king salmon fry

Type: Burglary, criminal mischief
On 3/2/11 at approximately 0830 hours Klawock AST responded to the Prince of Wales Hatchery on Port Saint Nicholas Road. Investigation revealed that sometime between 5:30 p.m. and 8 a.m. someone entered the building and turned several water valves off, depriving the king salmon fry of fresh water. This caused the oxygen levels in the water to fall to fatal levels. It is estimated that 98 to 99 percent of the salmon fry died. If anyone has any information concerning this crime please contact the Alaska State Troopers. The investigation continues.
