Crabber cited over female and undersized Tanners

Type: Retain female and undersized crab
On 2/3/25 Jakob V. Anderson, 44, from Lake Stevens, Wash., was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers for retaining female and undersized Tanner crab in the Bering Sea. Arraignment set for 4/29/25 in Unalaska District Court.

Tanner crabber cited at Kodiak

On 2/19/13 Ty L. Rouse, 51, of Kodiak, was cited by Kodiak Wildlife Troopers for commercial Tanner crab fishing in closed waters of the Kodiak District, Southeast Section. Arraignment set for 3/8/13 in Kodiak District Court.

Troopers charge Kodiak man with illegal crabbing

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Kodiak
Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 1/28/13 Kodiak Wildlife Troopers contacted Christopher Berns, 59, of Kodiak. Investigation showed Berns operated commercial Tanner crab gear off the F/V Natalia near Sitkalidak Strait on 1/27/13. An emergency order closed these waters to commercial Tanner crab fishing on 1/25/13 at 1800 hours. Berns was issued a summons for commercial fishing during a closed period and given an arraignment date of 2/22/13 in Kodiak District Court.

On 2/29/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, cited Dennis O'Neil, of Petersburg, for commercial fishing in a closed season for Tanner crab. This is a mandatory court appearance in Petersburg District Court.

Troopers say Chignik crabber stored pots illegally

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Kodiak
Type: Illegal storage of crab pots
On 2/29/12 Benjamin Allen, 33, of Chignik, was cited for illegal storage of commercial Tanner crab pots. Investigation showed Allen had left his pots baited and fishing in Castle Bay after the closure of the Chignik District on 2/12/12 by emergency order. Allen was given an arraignment date of 3/22/12 in Naknek District Court.

Hoonah crabber fined $1,500 after no contest plea

Type: Commercial fish closed waters, unlawful gear storage
On 7/6/11 William Veler, 49, of Hoonah, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, for commercial fishing in closed waters and for unlawful storage of Tanner crab gear. Veler was cited after the patrol vessel Enforcer located nine commercial Tanner crab pots in fishing condition in closed waters. On 7/6/11 Veler appeared in Hoonah District Court and pled no contest to commercial fishing in closed waters. He was fined $3,000 with $1,500 suspended.

Sitka crabber fined, allowed to buy back pots

Type: Update — improper gear
On 5/19/11 Troy A. Denkinger, 44, of Sitka, pled guilty to one count of operating commercial Tanner crab gear that did not contain the proper size of escape rings. He was fined $2,000 with $1,000 suspended. Denkinger was also allowed to purchase back his seized Tanner pots at $500 per pot.

Juneau crabbers charged with illegal pot storage

Type: Illegal storage of crab gear
On 5/6/11 Norval Nelson III, 36, of Juneau, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers for illegally storing 15 commercial Tanner crab pots after the five-day gear storage allowance. Nelson III was acting as the skipper onboard the F/V Lovey Joann. Also cited was 24-year-old Juneau resident Barry Moala, the permit holder onboard the vessel.

Invalid registration costs Juneau crabber $1,000

On 3/17/11 Norval Nelson, 84, of Juneau, pled guilty in Juneau District Court to retaining commercial Tanner crab on board his vessel after he had invalidated his Tanner crab registration. Nelson was fined $1,000 with a $10 surcharge.

Southeast crabber ticketed for lack of buoy ID

On 2/24/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers aboard the patrol vessel Moen inspected commercial Tanner crab gear of the fishing vessel Loyal Lady and observed several buoys without the required Alaska Department of Fish and Game identification tags. On 3/2/11 James Seymour, 34, the permit holder on the F/V Loyal Lady, was issued a summons by Petersburg Post Alaska Wildlife Troopers. Arraignment is scheduled for 4/7/11 in Petersburg District Court.

Troopers make a pair of crabbing cases

On 1/21/11 Walter Sargent, 73, was cited by Kodiak Wildlife Troopers for commercial fishing for Tanner crab in Kaiugnak Bay after the area had closed to commercial Tanner crab fishing.

Location: Chignik
Type: Gear violation
On 1/17/11 Kodiak Wildlife Troopers aboard the patrol vessel
Woldstad were inspecting the fishing vessel Alaskan Frontier's gear at sea when it was discovered that the operator and permit holder, Alfredo S. Aboueid, 64, of Chignik Lagoon, was fishing pots configured to catch Tanner crab as well as a pot configured to catch cod. Aboueid admitted fishing the one pot configured to catch cod while validly registered and actively fishing in the Chignik Tanner crab fishery. Aboueid was issued a citation with arraignment set for 2/25/11 in Naknek District Court.

Juneau crab crew hit with multiple gear violations

On 3/17/10 Sitka-Juneau Wildlife Troopers charged James M. Martin, 80, of Juneau, and crewmembers Kenneth Merculief, 51, Robert Mortell, 47, and Patrick Ellisoff, 47, all of Juneau, for multiple counts regarding gear violations in the Icy Strait commercial Tanner crab fishery. The investigation started 2/16/10 when several of Martin's Tanner pots were inspected. The pots displayed tags that had been sworn to be lost by Martin. Additional gear checks revealed Martin was operating pots which were unmarked, marked with the wrong Alaska Department of Fish and Game number, did not display any Tanner crab pot tag, displayed voided Tanner crab pot tags, did not have escape rings, had escape rings set too high above the bottom of the pot, and had oversize biodegradable cotton. The four men are scheduled for arraignment in Juneau court.

Undersized Tanner crab cost skipper $1,500

Type: Retained undersized Tanner crab
On 8-25-09, James E. Wolkoff, age 54, of Anchorage, pled guilty in the Valdez District Court to the charge of retaining undersized Tanner crab. Wolkoff, who is the skipper and permit holder aboard the F/V Zone Five, was fined $3,000 with $1,500 suspended and placed on two years probation. The charge of unlawful possession of fish was dismissed.
