Another company ticketed over fish tickets

Type: Failure to submit fish tickets
On 11/28/11 Alaska Glacier Seafoods Inc. was cited for failing to submit fish tickets to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game within seven days as required by regulation. A court date has been set for 12/7/11 in Juneau District Court.

Dutch Harbor report

From the local police blotter:

Trespass, Nov. 21 — Woman asked that an officer advise a man who had been living in her house for the last two and a half months that he was no longer welcome, because he has told too many lies.

Roads, Nov. 25 — Several complaints were received regarding adults, children and dogs sledding down the middle of a roadway and generally creating hazardous conditions for everyone around them. An officer contacted the offenders and advised them against playing in the middle of the road.

Theft, Nov. 26 — Officers responded to Bering Fisheries, where a fight had broken out after one man had stolen several items from another. Officers were able to locate most but not all of the missing items after speaking to witnesses. Under investigation.

Juneau gillnetter fined, forfeits fish worth $3,800

Type: Update — commercial fish closed period
On 11/23/11 Ryan C. Gullufsen, 37, of Juneau, entered a guilty plea to two counts of operating a commercial gillnet during a closed period south of Juneau. A third count of commercial fishing during a closed period was dismissed as part of a plea agreement. Gullufsen was fined a total of $24,000 with $20,000 suspended and placed on probation for two years. In addition, he was ordered to forfeit just over $3,800 worth of illegally retained fish. The charges stemmed from a patrol near the Point Bishop commercial fishing regulatory marker. Gullufsen, on board his boat the F/V Seniavin Sun, was videotaped drifting over the line into closed waters on three separate occasions within a three-hour period.

Cold storage nets $750 fine in fish ticket case

Location: Petersburg
Type: Update — fish ticket
On 11/23/11 Coastal Cold Storage Inc., of Petersburg, was represented by Greg Einerson in Petersburg District Court. Coastal was charged with one count of failing to complete all forms required of fish buyers. The charge was the result of an Alaska Wildlife Troopers investigation that showed Coastal took possession of a load of commercial red king crab and did not begin a fish ticket at the time of delivery, as required by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Coastal pled guilty to the charge and was sentenced to a fine of $2,000 with $1,250 suspended and placed on probation for one year.

Drunk disturbance, Nov. 15, 0225 hours — Officers responded to a food fight onboard a fishing vessel, where they found that the captain and another man had thrown mashed potatoes, corn dogs and jalapeƱos at the cook's stateroom door. The captain, who denied involvement until reminded by officers that his shoes were covered with food similar to that found in the hallway, was advised to apologize and treat his crew with more respect.

Animal, Nov. 18 — A cat whose seasickness prevented it from adapting to life on a boat was turned in for adoption.

Man fined for false report of illegal Kusko fishing

Type: False report
On 11/10/11 James T. Williams, 34, of Quinhagak, pled guilty in Bethel District Court to one count of making a false report of a crime occurring. Williams made false statements to a peace officer in connection with a Wildlife Safeguard complaint alleging criminal commercial fishing violations in Kuskokwim Bay during the summer of 2011 fishing season. The allegations were proven to be fabricated. Williams was fined $3,000 with $1,500 suspended, and placed on probation for one year.

Sitka crabber fined $3,000 in sad Dungeness story

Type: Update — operate Dungeness gear from tender
On 11/15/11 David A. Coleman, 54, of Sitka, pled no contest in Sitka District Court to one count of operating commercial Dungeness gear from a registered tender. Coleman was fined $6,000 with $3,000 suspended and placed on probation for two years. The charge stems from Coleman being observed by troopers operating gear with a vessel registered as a tender for Dungeness crab in Hoonah Sound on 7/16/11. The tender used in the violation was later inadvertently sunk while being operated with a load Dungeness pot gear aboard. Commercial Dungeness crab regulations prohibit the operation of Dungeness gear or possession of Dungeness gear on a tender registered in the Dungeness fishery.

Troopers charge Sitka pair with guiding violations

Type: Sportfish guide violations
On 11/15/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, charged Robert L. Warren, 34, and Michael R. Keating, 55, both of Sitka, for sportfish guiding violations. The violations are a result of Warren being observed with four clients on a chartered trip with Big Blue Fisheries while using a vessel not registered to sportfish guide. Investigation showed Keating, owner of Big Blue, had compelled Warren to charter the clients on a vessel Keating knew was unregistered and did not have saltwater logbooks assigned. Warren was charged for failing to register the sportfish guide vessel and for failing to obtain a sportfish guide logbook. Keating was charged with two counts of sportfish guide operator assisting in a violation. Arraignments are set for 11/29/11 in Sitka District Court.

Salmon troller, crewman fined after guilty pleas

Type: Update — commercial fish closed season
On 11/7/11 Thomas A. George, 56, and Jared B. Barlow, 37, both of Klawock, pled guilty to one count each of commercial salmon trolling in a closed season. George, the permit holder onboard the F/V High Pockets, was fined $10,000 with $6,000 suspended and placed on probation for three years. Barlow, the crewman onboard the vessel, was fined $7,500 with $5,000 suspended and placed on probation for one year. Charges for unlawful possession of fish were dismissed as part of the agreement.

Petersburg seiner nets $1,500 fine after guilty plea

Type: Update — commercial fish closed period
On 11/14/11 Lars R. Eide, 69, of Petersburg, entered a guilty plea in Petersburg District Court for one count of commercial salmon seining during a closed period. Eide was fined $5,000 with $3,500 suspended. The charge stemmed from Alaska Wildlife Troopers observing Eide, the permit holder and operator of the F/V Island Girl, deploying seine gear approximately five minutes before the seine opening in Tebenkof Bay on 7/31/11.

Public safety, Nov. 9, 0146 hours — Officer watched three extremely intoxicated and giggling louts urinate on the road, on themselves, on one another, and on a taxi in front of the Harbor View bar. The wet-legged men abashedly explained to the admonishing officer they had been kicked out of the bar before having an opportunity to use the restroom there.

Death investigation, Nov. 9, 0506 hours — A crewman onboard the F/V Alaska Warrior was found in his stateroom, dead of undetermined causes. Several persons of interest were identified. Under investigation.

Liquor law violation, Nov. 11 — An officer following up on a complaint about bringing open containers of alcohol into a bar found evidence to suggest that two underage Coast Guard crew may have been drinking alcohol as well. Information passed on to USCG cutter staff.

Petersburg cold storage cited over fish ticket

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Petersburg
Type: Fail to complete fish ticket
On 11/12/11 Coastal Cold Storage Inc. in Petersburg was issued a summons for failure to complete fish tickets at the time of sale or delivery. On 11/3/11 Coastal Cold Storage purchased red king crab from a local fisherman and failed to complete a fish ticket at the time of delivery. Arraignment set for 11/30/11.

Seiner nets $4,000 fine after guilty plea at Hoonah

Type: Update — commercial fish closed waters
On 11/9/11 Alan C. Jacklet, 47, of Carnation, Wash., and off the F/V Adirondack, entered a guilty plea in Hoonah District Court to one count of commercial fishing in closed waters. Jacklet was charged after Alaska Wildlife Troopers observed his vessel fishing closer than 500 yards to the mouth of a documented salmon stream in July. The incident occurred south of Tenakee Inlet. Jacklet was fined $8,000 with $4,000 suspended and placed on probation for one year. After troopers contacted Jacklet he chose to release the set and did not retain any of the fish.

Suspicious activity, Oct. 31 — UniSea security reported that someone had docked a skiff in a suspicious location near managers' housing. An officer determined that this did not constitute a crime.

Public safety, Nov. 3 — High wind advisory, gusting to 80 mph.

Disorderly conduct, Nov. 3 — Officers responded to a disturbance at the Grand Aleutian hotel, and were met with an extremely intoxicated man who exposed himself to security officers and beat his roommate with a pillow before being placed under arrest. Ruben Eram, 24, of Portland, was charged with criminal trespass, indecent exposure and resisting arrest.

On 9/23/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Juneau Post, issued Jacob B. Carte, 28, of Juneau, a summons for failing to submit commercial fish tickets to the Department of Fish and Game within seven days of the initial delivery. Arraignment set for 9/29/11 in Juneau District Court.

Two men charged with illegal sea cucumber takes

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Sitka
Type: Commercial fish closed season, unlawful possession
On 11/1/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, charged James Mitchell Cowan, of Sitka, and Jorge Ignacio Molina-Salas, of Atlanta, Ga., with one count each of commercial fishing during a closed season and unlawful possession of commercial fish. Previous investigation revealed Cowan and Molina-Salas had taken 177 pounds of sea cucumbers with dive gear from the F/V Wild Horses in late August, when the season did not open until 10/3/11. Arraignments set for 11/15/11 in Sitka District Court.
