Gear violations ring up fines for two fishermen

Type: Update — gear violation
On 5/19/10 Eli Mendenhall, of Nome, was convicted in the Nome Court of four counts of commercial crabbing without employing the use of escape rings. The case was a result of illegally configured pots discovered by Alaska Wildlife Troopers during a patrol in March 2010. Mendenhall was sentenced to fines totaling $2,000 and one year probation.

Location: Valdez
Type: Update — gear violation
On 5/25/10 Tom C. Hoblet, 59, of False Pass, pled guilty in the Valdez District Court to the charge of unlawful gear — escape ring requirements. Hoblet, who is the skipper and permit holder onboard the fishing vessel Aleut Lady, was fined $1,000 with $500 suspended. Hoblet was further placed on probation for one year.

Troopers cite Sitka halibut fishermen

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Juneau
Type: No crew license
On 5/24/10 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, cited Kyle Robert Hansen, 24, of Sitka, for failing to have a 2010 crew license in possession during a commercial halibut fishery. Mark W. Short, 54, of Sitka, the permit holder, was also cited for employing an unlicensed crewmember. Each citation has bail set at $260 in Sitka District Court.

Troopers ticket two Copper River tender crewmen

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Copper River flats
Type: No crew license
On 4/17/10 Chester E. Bushnell, 32, and Stephanie R. Tarabochia, 31, both from Warrenton, Ore., were cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, for commercial fishing as crewmembers aboard the F/V Majestik tender without having a 2010 crew license in their possession as required. Bail was set at $260 for each of them, in the District Court of Cordova.

Troopers cite Sitka Sound salmon troller

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Sitka
Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 5/16/10 Sitka Wildlife Troopers contacted Russel W. Beard, 31, of Reno, Nev., onboard the F/V Geraldine during the Sitka Sound spring troll fishery. Investigation revealed Beard was power trolling inside the Western Channel statistical area while that area was not open to commercial fishing. Beard was cited into Sitka District Court on one count of commercial fishing in a closed period. Arraignment is set for 5/25/10.

Troopers ticket Kodiak herring fisherman

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Barling Bay
Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 5/5/10 Harold Christiansen, 62, of Old Harbor, was issued a citation for commercial fishing in a closed period during the Kodiak herring sac roe fishery in Barling Bay. Christiansen was given a court date of 6/4/10 in the Kodiak District Court.

Burglary of Trident Seafoods housing unit reported

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Chignik Bay
Type: Burglary
On 5/12/10 at 1000 hours, Clyde Pedersen reported that a Trident Seafoods housing unit in Chignik Bay had been broken into. The Chignik Bay village public safety officer responded to the building to investigate. The VPSO found that two separate apartments inside the building had been broken into. At this time, it appears that nothing was taken. Investigation continues into both burglaries.

Troopers investigate Akutan stabbing

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Akutan
Type: Assault
At approximately 1201 hours on 4/26/10, a 41-year-old seafood processing plant employee, Rowel M. Gimeno, of California, reported that he had been stabbed in a bar in Akutan in the early morning hours of 4/13/10 during a physical altercation which resulted in him being transported by medevac to Anchorage for treatment. Gimeno sustained non-life threatening injuries and was released from the hospital the following day. AST Investigation continues.

Troopers accuse crabber of co-op gear violation

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Unalaska
Type: Illegal operation of crab gear
On 5/2/10 Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers issued a summons to Michael Howard Rosenthal, 56, of Bainbridge Island, Wash., for commercial king crab fishing the commercial king crab gear of another vessel that was in a co-op agreement after the co-op vessel had unregistered from the king crab fishery. Arraignment is scheduled for 5/26/10 in the Unalaska District Court.
