Five Prince William Sound gillnetters ticketed

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Prince William Sound
Type: Commercial fish closed waters
On 6/20/11 at approximately 2010 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from the Cordova Post contacted Michael Piatkoff, 21, of Gonvick, Minn. Investigation revealed that Piatkoff was operating a drift gillnet in waters closed to commercial fishing aboard the F/V Sea Poacher in the Eshamy District. A summons was issued to appear for arraignment on 7/27/11 in Cordova District Court.

On 6/21/11 at approximately 0600 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from the Cordova Post contacted Ron Thomson, 47, of Toledo, Wash. Investigation revealed that Thomson was operating a drift gillnet in waters closed to commercial fishing aboard the F/V Strait Shot in the Eshamy District. A summons was issued to appear for arraignment on 7/27/11 in Cordova District Court.

On 6/21/11 at approximately 0355 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from the Cordova Post contacted Michael Basargin, 34, of Wasilla. Investigation revealed that Basargin was operating a drift gillnet in waters closed to commercial fishing aboard the F/V Sea Runner in the Eshamy District. A summons was issued to appear for arraignment on 7/27/11 in the Cordova District Court.

On 6/21/11 at approximately 0430 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from the Cordova Post contacted Michael Davis, 25, of Homer. Investigation revealed that Davis was operating a drift gillnet in waters closed to commercial fishing aboard the F/V Jetsetter in the Eshamy District. A summons was issued to appear for arraignment on 7/27/11 in Cordova District Court.

Location: Main Bay, Prince William Sound
Type: Commercial fish closed waters
On 6/22/11 at approximately 2008 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from the Cordova Post contacted Elliot Irvin, 25, of Conway, N.H. Investigation revealed that Irvin was operating a set gillnet in waters closed to commercial fishing in the Eshamy District. A summons was issued to appear for arraignment on 7/27/11 in Cordova District Court.

  1. A likely excuse for the out-of-state fishermen can be not knowing the lines between open and closed areas of a commercial fishery. For all I know, those fishermen from Homer and Wasilla could very well be "Transplant Alaskan" - I recently saw a tshirt with that phrase to counter-act the "Alaska Grown" version of wearable products.
