Herring seiner cited at Sitka

Location: Sitka
Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 4/4/23 Alaska Wildlife Troopers observed the F/V Freedom deploy a herring seine west of the west closure line in the Redoubt Bay area commercial sac roe herring fishery. Investigation revealed Bruce Marifern, 62, of Petersburg, had made the set in an area not open by emergency order to commercial sac roe herring harvest. Marifern was cited for commercial fishing in a closed period.

Sitka herring seiner cited

Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 3/30/22 Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted Mitchell Eide, 56, of Petersburg, after observing his vessel, the F/V Rose Lee, with commercial seine gear deployed after the 5 p.m. closure of the herring fishery. Eide was cited for commercial herring fishing in a closed period.

Troopers cite Sitka herring seiner

On 4/5/21 Alaska Wildlife Troopers observed the F/V Little Lady set a commercial herring seine in waters not opened by emergency order to commercial fishing. Operator and permit holder Daniel F. Castle, 58, of Ketchikan, was cited for the offense. No fish were retained in the set. Arraignment set in Sitka District Court.

Shooting at vessel results in arrest

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Wadleigh Island
Type: Weapons
On 3/27/18 at approximately 0458 hours, Alaska State Troopers on Prince of Wales Island received a report of an individual shooting at a fishing vessel in the herring fishery near Wadleigh Island. Troopers responded via the P/V Interceptor. Investigation revealed Donald Austin, 60, of Wadleigh Island, had placed the crew in fear of imminent serious physical injury after firing multiple rounds with at least one round striking a fishing vessel. Austin was arrested on charges of assault and misconduct involving weapons. He was remanded to the Craig jail without bail pending arraignment. Alcohol was believed to be a factor.

Crewmen, skipper cited at Togiak

Type: Unlicensed crew
On 4/27/16 Alaska Wildlife Troopers patrolling the Togiak herring fishery boarded the F/V Seafreeze Alaska. During the routine boarding, Christopher Phillips, 38; Khanh Tran, 44; and Duc Vo, 51, all of Washington, failed to provide an Alaska commercial crewmember license. All three individuals were issued citations with bail set at $260 each. David Strand, 63, of Washington, the skipper of the F/V Seafreeze Alaska, also was issued a citation for employing unlicensed crewmembers. Bail was set at $260.

Two charged with fishing out of bounds at Sitka

On 3/23/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, summonsed Ronald Porter, 61, of Ketchikan, and Justin Peeler, 33, of Sitka, for operating commercial seine gear outside the set boundaries established by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for the Sitka sac roe fishery. These charges carry a mandatory appearance in Sitka District Court.

Kodiak herring seiner cited

Location: Kodiak
Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 4/23/13 at 2026 hours, Kodiak Wildlife Troopers contacted Brian Blondin, 25, of Kodiak, during the herring fishery in the Village Islands/Uganik Bay section. Blondin was the operator/permit holder aboard the F/V Stephanie Lynn and was operating a purse seine outside the designated southern boundary of the Village Islands section. Blondin was cited for commercial fishing during a closed period and given an arraignment date of 5/17/13 in Kodiak District Court.

Man arrested in Sitka herring fishery

Type: Warrant arrest
On 3/27/13, at approximately 1820 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Sitka for the herring sac roe fishery contacted Bryan Haney, 29, of Cordova, onboard the F/V Ace. Investigation revealed Haney had an outstanding warrant for his arrest stemming from a charge of commercial fishing during a closed season. Haney was arrested and transported to the Sitka Police Department jail where he was held on $500 cash bail.

Ketchikan man accused of illegal herring sales

Type: Illegal sale of personal use herring
On 3/7/13 Frank Bruno, 40, of Ketchikan, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers for unlawfully selling personal use-caught herring to individuals in Ketchikan. Arraignment set for 5/15/13 in Ketchikan District Court.

Togiak herring spotter planes burglarized

Type: Theft, criminal mischief
On 5/15/12 at 0600 hours, the Alaska State Troopers in Dillingham received a report in Togiak that several aircraft had been damaged and items taken from inside the aircraft. The aircraft are privately owned and are working as contracted fliers during the herring fishery. Investigation revealed that four Super Cub-type airplanes were parked at the Togiak airport and had windows damaged in an estimated amount of $1,000. Two firearms, a fuel jug and survival gear were taken from the aircraft in an estimated amount of $4,000. During the investigation, all of the stolen items were recovered except for a firearm. The investigation is still ongoing.

Sitka herring seiner nets $250 fine in 2011 case

On 4/26/12 in Sitka District Court, Thomas Stafford, as skipper and permit holder on the F/V Infinite Grace, was found guilty of commercial fishing in closed waters on 4/4/11 during the third opener of the 2011 Sitka sac roe herring fishery. Stafford was fined $1,500 with $1,250 suspended and put on probation. The proceeds of the seized fish ticket are due to be determined on 5/30/12 in a post-sentencing hearing in Sitka District Court.

Interference charged in Sitka herring fishery

On 4/7/12 Robert Haltiner, captain of the F/V Signe Lynn, a registered tender vessel participating in the 2012 Sitka sac roe herring fishery, was issued a summons by Sitka Wildlife Troopers to appear in Sitka District Court for interfering with commercial gear. Investigation revealed that during the third opening of the fishery, Haltiner attempted to block and interfere with a seine vessel's set.

Sitka seiners fined, lose $27K in herring proceeds

Type: Update — commercial fish closed season
On 4/4/12, approximately one year after initially being charged with operating a herring seine net off the F/V Star Shadow during a closed season, operator Joe Lindholm and permit holder William Glenovich both appeared in Sitka District Court for nonjury trial. Lindholm was found guilty and ordered to pay a $9,000 fine, with $6,000 suspended. He was placed on probation for a period of one year. Glenovich also was found guilty as the permit holder for operating a seine net during a closed season. Glenovich was fined $3,000 with $2,500 suspended and placed on probation for a period of one year. Seized herring proceeds of about $27,000 are to be forfeited to the state.

Sitka herring seiner charged over costly collision

Type: Reckless operation of a watercraft
On 1/11/12 the Sitka District Attorney's office charged Daniel J. Crome, 35, of Seattle, with reckless operation of a watercraft, based on an investigation by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post. The charge stems from a vessel collision during the April 2011 Sitka Sound herring sac roe fishery, where the F/V Arctic Fox, operated by Crome, collided with the F/V Talia, operated by William Menish, of Petersburg. More than $40,000 in damage was caused to the F/V Talia in the collision. Arraignment set for 1/24/12 in Sitka District Court.

Herring fisherman nets $3,000 fine after guilty plea

Type: Update — commercial fish closed season
On 9/8/11 Nicholas Johanson, 61, of Seattle, pled guilty to one count of commercial fishing in closed waters in Southeast Alaska. Johanson was charged on 4/7/11 during the 2011 Sitka herring sac roe fishery. He was fined $6,000 with $3,000 suspended. Johanson also was placed on probation for two years, not to commit any commercial fishing violations during this period.

Another boat finds trouble with fish cops at Sitka

On 4/4/11 James Miller, 58, and Nels Otness, 85, both of Petersburg, were cited by wildlife troopers for fishing during a closed period during the third opening of the Sitka Sound herring sac roe fishery. Both men were aboard the F/V Aleutian Spirit. Arraignment is set for 4/12/11 at Sitka District Court.

More Sitka seiners accused of illegal fishing

On 4/4/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, observed the F/V Infinite Glory fishing after the closure in the Sitka Sound herring sac roe fishery. The skipper and permit holder, Bryan R. Howey, 42, of Sitka, was cited for fishing in a closed period. Arraignment is set for 4/12/11 in Sitka District Court.

On 4/4/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Sitka issued a summons to Thomas Stafford, 45, of Homer, for commercial fishing in closed waters during the third opener of the Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery. Stafford is scheduled to be arraigned on 4/12/11 in Sitka District Court.

On 4/4/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, observed the F/V Defiant fishing before the open period in the Sitka Sound herring sac roe fishery. The skipper, Eric Rosvold, 58, of Petersburg, and the permit holder, George J. Skeek, 53, of Petersburg, were cited for commercial fishing in a closed period. Arraignment is set for 4/12/11 in Sitka District Court.

Sitka herring seiner accused of illegal fishing

On 4/4/11 John Johanson, 54, of Klawock, was cited for operating a commercial herring seine in closed waters. Johanson was cited after wildlife troopers documented the F/V Alaskan Rose fishing in closed waters during the third opening of the Sitka herring sac roe fishery. He was given a court date of 4/12/11.

Troopers ticket Canadian fish tender at Sitka

On 4/1/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Sitka issued a summons to John Muren, 48, of Rosedale, British Columbia, for failing to register as a commercial tender in the Sitka sac roe herring fishery. Muren is scheduled to be arraigned on 4/12/11 in Sitka District Court.
