900 pounds of halibut seized

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Sitka
Type: Sportfishing violations
On 8/12/22 at approximately 1730 hours, the Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted the commercial fishing tender Alaska Chieftain. Investigation revealed multiple sportfishing violations. Approximately 900 pounds of halibut was seized and vessel captain Kapp Fredrick, 52, of Washington, was given a summons to appear in the Sitka court. Crewmember Jason Lang, 44, of Washington, was cited for unlawful possession of two yelloweye rockfish. Crewmember Patrick Stewart, 55, of Florida, was issued a citation for unlawful sportfish gear. Crewmember Andrew Wegmann, 29, of Los Angeles, was issued a citation for unlawful sportfishing gear.

Man draws jail time in Bristol Bay assault

Location: Naknek
Type: Sentencing
On 3/15/17 Don R. Iodice, 54, of Everett, Wash., was sentenced in Naknek District Court to 30 days in jail in connection with an assault on his coworker and captain of a tender vessel. Bristol Bay Wildlife Troopers received the initial complaint on 7/3/16 while the vessel was in the Egegik commercial fishing district. The court also placed Iodice on probation for two years and ordered him not to return to the fishing grounds in Bristol Bay.

Troopers deal citations around Southeast Alaska

Location: Juneau
Type: Commercial fish closed area
On 6/24/13 Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Juneau cited David Williams, 43, of Juneau, for operating a commercial drift gillnet in closed waters in District 11A. Arraignment set for 7/10/13 in Juneau District Court.

Location: Juneau
Type: Commercial fish closed area
On 6/24/13 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Juneau Post, issued Jonathan T. Pavlik, 31, of Yakutat, a summons for commercial fishing in a closed area. Arraignment set for 7/10/13 in Juneau District Court.

Location: Hoonah
Type: Commercial fish closed area
On 6/26/13 Brian R. Vaughn, 50, of Juneau, was served a summons charging him with commercial fishing during a closed season. Vaughn was commercial drift gillnet fishing onboard the F/V Kiksadi in the closed waters of District 11A. Arraignment set for 7/10/13 in Juneau District Court.

Location: Sitka
Type: Unlawful possession
On 6/28/13 Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted David Castle, 46, of Sitka, captain of the F/V Eyak, a tender participating in the commercial troll fishery, after receiving a report that he had bought a king salmon under 28 inches in length from a troller. Investigation revealed that Castle had been in possession of an undersized king salmon. The salmon was seized and Castle was cited.

Type: Halibut permit
On 6/30/13 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, cited John Nelson, 34, of Metlakatla, for operating commercial halibut longline gear and possessing commercially caught halibut without a Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission permit. A mandatory court appearance was set for 7/25/13 in Ketchikan District Court.

Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 7/3/13 Travis A. Bangs, 19, of Wrangell, was cited for operating a commercial gillnet during a closed period in District 15C north of Juneau. Troopers in a state aircraft observed the F/V Silver K deploying its gillnet prior to the commercial opening on June 30. Arraignment set for 7/10/13 in Juneau District Court.

Sitka tenderman cited for small kings, marijuana

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Sitka
Type: Possess undersized king salmon
On 5/14/13 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited David Castle, 46, of Sitka, for unlawful possession of fish and misconduct involving a controlled substance. The charges stem from an investigation on 5/10/13 which showed Castle, onboard the fish tender Eyak, bought and possessed undersized king salmon. During the investigation, Castle was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana. Three undersized king salmon, drug paraphernalia and the marijuana were seized. Arraignment set for 5/21/13 in Sitka District Court.

Interference charged in Sitka herring fishery

Location: Sitka
Type: Interfering with commercial gear
On 4/7/12 Robert Haltiner, captain of the F/V Signe Lynn, a registered tender vessel participating in the 2012 Sitka sac roe herring fishery, was issued a summons by Sitka Wildlife Troopers to appear in Sitka District Court for interfering with commercial gear. Investigation revealed that during the third opening of the fishery, Haltiner attempted to block and interfere with a seine vessel's set.

Sitka crabber fined $3,000 in sad Dungeness story

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Sitka
Type: Update — operate Dungeness gear from tender
On 11/15/11 David A. Coleman, 54, of Sitka, pled no contest in Sitka District Court to one count of operating commercial Dungeness gear from a registered tender. Coleman was fined $6,000 with $3,000 suspended and placed on probation for two years. The charge stems from Coleman being observed by troopers operating gear with a vessel registered as a tender for Dungeness crab in Hoonah Sound on 7/16/11. The tender used in the violation was later inadvertently sunk while being operated with a load Dungeness pot gear aboard. Commercial Dungeness crab regulations prohibit the operation of Dungeness gear or possession of Dungeness gear on a tender registered in the Dungeness fishery.

Type: Operate commercial Dungeness gear from tender
On 9/13/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, cited David A. Coleman, 53, of Sitka, for operating commercial Dungeness crab gear from a tender. Previous investigation and observations revealed Coleman was using two vessels to operate commercial Dungeness gear with one of the vessels being registered as a tender for Dungeness. Arraignment set for 9/27/11 in Sitka District Court.

Troopers ticket Canadian fish tender at Sitka

Type: Tender registration
On 4/1/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Sitka issued a summons to John Muren, 48, of Rosedale, British Columbia, for failing to register as a commercial tender in the Sitka sac roe herring fishery. Muren is scheduled to be arraigned on 4/12/11 in Sitka District Court.

A second Sitka herring tender ticketed

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Type: Failure to register tender vessel
On 4/2/10 Carl E. Etheridge, 50, of Whittier, was cited as the skipper of the F/V Naknek Spirit, a commercial fishing tender, for failing to register his vessel with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game upon arrival into the Sitka sac roe herring fishing registration area. Etheridge was given an arraignment date of 4/20/10.

Troopers ticket tender skipper at Sitka

Type: Failure to register tender vessel
On 4/2/10 Charles B. Baker, 79, of Auburn, Wash., was cited as the skipper of the F/V Eigil B, a commercial fishing tender, for failing to register his vessel with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game upon arrival into the Sitka sac roe herring fishing registration area. Baker was given an arraignment date of 4/20/10.
