Troopers investigate deaths at Seward, Akutan

Type: Death investigation
On 8/22/16 the Seward Police Department responded to a report of a deceased male near the Polar Seafoods processing plant. Initial investigation revealed James Woods, 58, of Wasilla, was deceased inside a vehicle registered to him. Notification subsequently was made to family members. Seward police requested assistance from the Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Bureau of Investigation, which took over case responsibility on 8/24/16. Troopers are continuing the investigation and are asking anyone with information regarding the death to contact the Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Bureau of Investigation in Soldotna at (907) 262-4453. Reports can also be made to Crime Stoppers anonymously at 283-TIPS (8477).

Location: Akutan
Type: Suicide
On 8/23/16 at about 0920 hours, the Akutan village public safety officer was notified of a suicide that occurred at the Trident Seafoods plant in Akutan. A Dutch Harbor-based Alaska wildlife trooper responded to investigate along with the VPSO. Investigation revealed a 36-year-old male was found deceased as a result of a suicidal act. No foul play is suspected. The remains have been sent to Anchorage for autopsy. The decedent's name is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.

Groundfish harvester accused of VMS violation

On 10/21/15 Alaska Wildlife Troopers issued a summons to Eros F. Kuzmin, 41, of Homer, on the F/V Navigator for failing to have an activated vessel monitoring system as required while participating in the state waters parallel groundfish fishery. Arraignment set for 12/1/15 in Seward District Court.

Money reported stolen from bunkhouse

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Type: Theft
On 8/15/13 Reinaldo Cajigal, 56, of Seward, reported he had been saving money and left it in the Polar Seafoods bunkhouse. Cajigal said it was stolen sometime the day before. While Cajigal was making his report, Bradley Davis, 58, of Seward, also reported he had money stolen from his room in the bunkhouse during the same time frame. The investigation continues.

Homer man cited twice over vessel ID issues

Type: Vessel license, registration
On 4/2/13 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Seward Post, issued two citations to Nikolai N. Yakunin, 37, of Homer, on the commercial fishing vessel Wonder Worker, for failing to have a current vessel license number plate permanently affixed to his vessel as required and for failing to have current vessel registration paperwork onboard. Bail was set at $110 for the first violation and $210 for the second violation. An optional court appearance is scheduled in Seward District Court.

Arrest made in Seward bunkhouse assault

On 3/2/13 at approximately 0327 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a report of an assault at the Polar Seafoods bunkhouse at mile 2 of Nash Road. Investigation revealed that Kenneth Woodard, 52, of Seward, assaulted his roommate, Brian Eby, 44, of Seward. Woodard was arrested and remanded to the Seward jail on the charge of assault.

Fisherman charged at Seward with VMS violation

On 2/2/13 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Seward Post, issued a summons to Michael Roy Stassen, 44, of Fountain Hills, Ariz., on the commercial fishing vessel Spectre for participating in a state and federal groundfish fishery without having an activated vessel monitoring system onboard. Arraignment set for 2/12/13 in Seward District Court.

Black cod fisherman cited over lack of permit card

Type: Permit violation
On 10/7/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Seward Post, issued a summons to Donald Eugene Bridges, 54, of Anchorage. Investigation revealed that Bridges, while commercial fishing on the F/V Currency, did catch and retain 3,242 pounds of black cod without having a required Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission permit card for black cod. Arraignment set for 11/6/12 in Seward District Court.

Homer fisherman charged with dumping rockfish

Type: Groundfish violation
On 8/11/12 at 1500 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Seward Post, cited Ilia Nikolai Kuzmin, 36, of Homer, on the F/V Currency. An investigation revealed Kuzmin discarded/wasted/dumped 365 pounds of commercially caught shortraker rockfish over the side of his vessel into Resurrection Bay near Seward on 8/11/12. Arraignment set for 9/4/12 in Seward District Court.

On 6/12/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Seward Post, issued a summons to Anatoly Martushev, 27, of Wasilla, for exceeding his allowable bycatch while participating in the Cook Inlet commercial Pacific cod fishery. Arraignment set for 6/26/12 in Seward District Court.

Lack of CFEC card hooks halibut fisherman

On 10/15/09, Kenneth S. Phippen, 34 yoa, of Sitka, was charged by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Seward Post, for possessing and attempting to land approximately 24,000 pounds of commercially caught halibut without a 2009 CFEC card. Arraignment was set in the Seward District Court on 11/17/09.

Fisherman charged with excess ling cod bycatch

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Type: Exceed maximum bycatch
On 9/20/09 Vonifanti I. Basargin, 58 yoa, of Nikolaevsk, operator and permit holder on the F/V Eleon, was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Seward Post, for possessing 67.9 percent of bycatch (ling cod) in a directed groundfish fishery when the limit is 20 percent. Proceeds from the sale of the excess fish were seized by the state. Arraignment was set in the Seward District Court on 9/29/09.
