On 9/25/13 Blake Painter, 34, of Astoria, Ore., was cited by
Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers for commercial fishing for Pacific cod with unlawful gear. Painter, who was operating the F/V Tradition, was found to have
a cod pot with a tunnel eye perimeter in excess of 36 inches due to missing excluders. Arraignment set for 10/9/13 in Homer District Court.

Crabber fined $750 after court no-show

Type: Illegal crab gear
On 3/28/12 Michael Nilsen, 56, of Petersburg, failed to appear for an arraignment on a single count of operating a commercial king crab pot that failed to have the required legal escape rings. A judgment was entered against Nilsen for a fine of $750. The pot used in the violation is to be returned to Nilsen at his own expense and within 30 days.

Ketchikan crabber Aleutian Ballad hauls up a ticket

On 6/20/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers onboard the patrol vessel Enforcer cited David Lethin, 51, of Washington state, for operating a commercial king crab pot of the F/V Aleutian Ballad that failed to have an identification tag attached. Lethin was issued a summons to appear on 6/30/11 in Ketchikan District Court.

On 4/28/10 Bruce Stamper Jr., 38, of Cordova, was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, for commercial fishing but failing to register for the Prince William Sound Area E shrimp pot fishery. Arraignment is scheduled for 5/26/10 in the Cordova District Court.

Petre, the skipper and permit holder of the F/V Otter Dodger, was cited for not having a biodegradable escape mechanism as required on his commercial shrimp pot gear. Arraignment is scheduled for 5/26/10 in the District Court of Cordova.

Southeast guide convicted of shrimping violations

Type: Update — conviction
On 4/2/10 Kurt J. Whitehead, 39, of Klawock, pled guilty in Sitka District Court to two counts of sportfish guide assisting a client in a violation. Whitehead was fined $1,500 with $500 suspended on each count. In addition, he was placed on probation for two years and the shrimp pot gear used in the violation was forfeited to the state of Alaska. The charges were the result of an investigation beginning in June 2009 by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers during which it was discovered that Whitehead was providing sportfish guide service to two clients who operated shrimp pots from his vessel and used shrimp pot gear which had no biodegradable escape mechanism and in which he was using prohibited species as bait.

On 4/5/10 Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers issued a summons to Herman Erik Samuelson, 51, of King Cove, for commercial cod fishing in March in the South Alaska Peninsula state waters fishery with a pot that did not have a buoy identification tag. Arraignment is scheduled for 4/27/10 in the Valdez Superior Court.

On 3/19/10 Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers summonsed Dean Gould, 49, of King Cove, for improper identification of gear after it was discovered that Gould, who is the skipper and permit holder aboard the F/V Northern Star, stored a groundfish pot in state waters which lacked an Alaska Department of Fish and Game number. On 3/12/10 Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers issued citations to Nick August Carlson, 42, of Anchorage, for commercial fishing in the state bairdi Tanner crab fishery with a pot that did not have an Alaska Department of Fish and Game tag on the pot buoy, while a pot limit for the fishery was in effect. Carlson also had a pot with an illegible ADF&G number on the pot buoy. Arraignment on these and other gear violations is scheduled for 4/20/10 in the Valdez Superior Court.
