Trident plant cited over garbage attracting bears

On 8/29/24 Alaska Wildlife Troopers issued a citation to Trident Seafoods (North) in Cordova for feeding game — black bears. Trident Seafoods (North) continued to have unsecured garbage in a manner that attracted sow with cubs on multiple occasions. Bail was set for $320 into Cordova District Court.

Fisherman charged at Cordova with illegal catches

Alaska authorities have charged Keith D. Edens, 29, with two counts of illegally fishing within 500 yards of a freshwater salmon stream.

The case is pending in the District Court at Cordova.

On Aug. 26, Alaska State Troopers received a report that the F/V Lady Kay, later determined to be skipped by Edens, was commercial fishing in closed waters in Bainbridge Passage, court papers say.

Two witnesses observed the Lady Kay making sets, and one of the witnesses — a fish spotter — took photos and video, the papers say.

Troopers noted Edens filled out two fish tickets on Aug. 26, dropping off 101,454 and 61,394 pounds of salmon and receiving $48,854.40 for the fish, the court papers say.

Four Cordova fishermen cited over homepack

On 5/18/17 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Peter Brockert, 58, of Cordova, for failing to record on a state fish ticket his retention of commercially caught salmon for personal use. Breckert was issued a misdemeanor citation to appear in court and was released from the scene.

On 5/18/17 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Michael Glasen, 69, of Cordova, for failing to record on a state fish ticket his retention of commercially caught salmon for personal use. Glasen was issued a misdemeanor citation to appear in court and was released from the scene.

On 6/23/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet in waters closed to commercial fishing in Main Bay. Investigation revealed the vessel was the F/V Natural Gift, operated by Robert L. Nelson Jr., 52, of Soldotna. Arraignment set for 7/31/14 in Anchorage District Court.

Investigation revealed the vessel was the F/V Break Away, operated by Anthony Matveev, 29, of Wasilla. Arraignment set for 8/1/14 in Anchorage District Court.

Cordova man gets jail in reckless boating case

Type: Conviction — bench trial
On 6/27/14 Rodger Lee Koechling, 74, of Cordova, was convicted after a three-day bench trial of reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and reckless operation of a marine vessel. This case stemmed from an event on the Eyak River where Koechling used his 30-foot commercial bowpicker to recklessly scare and intimidate four other individuals (one 8 years old) who were fishing from a 15-foot skiff. Koechling was given 700 days in jail with 649 days suspended. The judge expressly related that this case was not about sportfishing versus commercial, but community condemnation and deterrence, and that this behavior presented a significant and exceptional risk to the occupants of the other vessel.

On 6/3/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet in waters closed to commercial fishing. Investigation revealed the vessel was the F/V Lady Lori operated by Brian Lee, 59, of Sutton. He was issued a summons to appear for arraignment on 6/18/14 in Cordova District Court.

Homer fisherman fined after trial verdict

Type: Trial verdict
On 4/9/14 a Cordova District Court jury found Jim L. Frary, 55, of Homer, guilty of failing to complete fish tickets as required by regulation. He was fined $1,500 and placed on probation for three years. This case stemmed from an August 2011 incident where the defendant repeatedly disregarded the processor (Trident Seafoods), the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and Alaska Wildlife Troopers in their attempts to have the defendant sign (complete) two fish tickets involving blackcod and halibut deliveries. The fish tickets eventually were completed to Fish and Game's satisfaction seven months after they were due.

Seiners fined, lose $4K in fishing proceeds

On 8/2/13 Brian Tarabochia, 28, of Shoreline, Wash., and Oshiana Black, 29, of Bellingham, Wash., were cited by Cordova Wildlife Troopers for commercial fishing in closed waters aboard the F/V Five Brothers. Tarabochia was operating the purse seine vessel and Black was the permit holder. Approximately 5,000 pounds of pink salmon were seized. On 9/4/13 Tarabochia and Black pled no contest to commercial fishing in closed waters. Both individuals were fined $3,000 with $1,500 suspended. Black was ordered to pay $4,259.20 in restitution for the fish caught during the violation.

Three fishermen sentenced at Cordova

The following resulted from proceedings on 6/26/13 in Cordova District Court:

• Andrew T. Eckley, 29, of Cordova, was fined $3,000 with $2,500 suspended and placed on a year's probation for commercial fishing during a closed period.

• Konstantin E. Basargin, 38, of Homer, was fined $3,000 with $1,500 suspended and placed on a year's probation for commercial fishing in closed waters.

• Efim J. Ivanov, 23, of Wasilla, was fined $3,000 with $1,500 suspended and placed on a year's probation for commercial fishing in closed waters.

Homer fisherman gets court date in Cordova

On 12/10/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Neal Reutov, 22, of Homer, for commercial fishing during a closed period. The F/V Contour was observed by state aircraft fishing during a closed period on 5/21/12. Arraignment scheduled for 1/16/12 in Cordova District Court.

Troopers seize heroin, meth bound for Cordova

Type: Drug interdiction
On 6/21/12 investigators with the Alaska State Troopers, Western Alaska Alcohol and Narcotics Team, contacted 21-year-old Enrique Lino, of Las Cruces, N.M., at the Anchorage airport while he was waiting for his flight to Cordova. During the contact investigators informed Lino that he was being detained pending application for a search warrant. Lino attempted to run from investigators and then proceeded to resist officers as he was detained. AST applied for and was granted a warrant to search Lino and his baggage. Pursuant to the search warrant investigators seized approximately 2 ounces of black tar heroin and approximately 1.5 ounces of methamphetamines, which were destined for Cordova. The heroin has a street value in Anchorage of approximately $29,000. The methamphetamine has a street value in Anchorage of approximately $10,000. The value of both would be slightly more in Cordova. Lino was transported to the Anchorage jail where his bail was set at $50,000 cash plus a court-approved third party. Investigation continues.

On 2/5/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Cordova Post contacted Andrew Mezirow, 47, of Seward. Investigation revealed that Mezirow had not submitted a sportfish logbook page during the 2011 season in the manner and timeframe specified in the logbook. Bail is set at $210 in Seward District Court.

Cordova troopers issue two CFEC-related citations

Type: Fail to imprint fish ticket with CFEC card
On 8/17/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, contacted Anthony Barnes, 33, of Cordova. Investigation revealed that Barnes had delivered commercially caught salmon and failed to have his 2011 Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission card imprinted on the fish ticket. Arraignment set for 9/28/11 in Cordova District Court.

On 9/12/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, contacted Toni Bocci, 55, of Cordova. Investigation revealed that Bocci had failed to obtain a 2011 Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission permit prior to operating longline gear, possessing commercially caught fish, and subsequent delivery and sale of the fish. Arraignment set for 9/28/11 in Cordova District Court.

Guide said no catch but lied, troopers charge

On 6/1/11, while performing a sportfish guide investigation, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Cordova Post found that Randy C. Wells, 35, of Moose Pass, made a false statement when he submitted a 2010 sportfish logbook page on 8/2/10 stating that no fish were caught or retained by paying clients aboard the charter vessel Rogue when in actuality seven pelagic rockfish, 15 coho salmon and eight halibut were caught and retained. Wells was summoned to appear on 6/21/11 in Seward District Court for arraignment.

Nevada man accused of lying to get crew license

On 11/16/10, while performing a licensing investigation, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Cordova Post found that Bryson G. Patula, 28, of Reno, Nev., made a false statement on a 2009 resident crewmember duplicate license application by stating he had lost his original license. Further investigation revealed that Patula had never purchased an original 2009 crewmember license. Arraignment is scheduled for 12/29/10 in Cordova District Court.

On 8/22/10 Ivan Seledkov, 30, of Woodburn, Ore., was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, for possessing and attempting to land approximately 7,638 pounds of commercially caught halibut without a 2010 Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission card. Arraignment was set for 9/1/10 in Cordova District Court.

Mann's arraignment date was set for 7/28/10 in Cordova District Court.

On 5/24/10 Cordova Wildlife Troopers cited James Day, 49, of Tacoma, Wash., for commercial fishing aboard the F/V Gentle Ben approximately 43 minutes after the period closed. Arraignment is scheduled for 6/30/10 in Cordova District Court.

On 5/27/10 Cordova Wildlife Troopers observed the F/V Westnet commercial fishing 4.95 nautical miles into closed waters. On 5/28/10 Alexandre Reutov, 24, of Homer, was cited for commercial fishing in closed waters and illegal possession. The F/V Westnet was seized. Arraignment was held in Cordova District Court on 6/4/10, where Reutov pled guilty to the charges. On 6/4/10 the F/V Westnet was returned to Reutov.

On 6/8/10 David Carlson, 21, of Cordova, was cited for commercial fishing in closed waters while acting as the permit holder aboard the F/V Net Profit. Arraignment is scheduled for 6/30/10 in Cordova District Court.
