Three salmon fishermen cited at Sitka

Location: Sitka
Type: Undersized king salmon
On 2/8/24 Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted Timothy Robinson, 64, of Sitka, during a commercial salmon offload to a local processing facility. Investigation revealed Robinson had landed one undersized king salmon and had concealed two additional unreported king salmon aboard his vessel. Robinson was cited for retaining undersized salmon and failing to report on a fish ticket.

On 2/7/24 Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted Cale LaDuke, 42, of Sitka, during a commercial salmon offload to a local processing facility. Investigation revealed LaDuke had landed four undersized king salmon. LaDuke was cited for retaining undersized salmon.

On 2/7/24 Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted Ryan Andrews, 45, of Sitka, during a commercial salmon offload to a local processing facility. Investigation revealed Andrews had landed five undersized king salmon. Andrews was cited for retaining undersized salmon.

On 11/18/23 Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted Casey DiGennaro, 39, of Sitka, regarding rockfish left aboard his vessel following a commercial salmon offload. DiGennaro was cited for failing to report all fish taken on a fish ticket as required.

On 1/23/23 Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted Jeffrey Turner, 55, of Sitka, offloading commercial troll-caught salmon to a Sitka processor. After the offload concluded, troopers located unreported fish remaining onboard the vessel. Turner was cited for failing to report king salmon kept as personal use at the time of a commercial offload.

The Alaska Wildlife Troopers arrested Tremaine Lawrence, 34, of Washington state, on an outstanding bench warrant. Lawrence originally was charged with taking an overlimit of commercial geoducks and knowingly recording false information on a fish ticket.

Pelican troller charged with multiple offenses

On 9/28/21 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, charged James Steven Daniels, 67, of Pelican, with three counts of failure to submit intent to operate and 10 counts of failure to complete fish tickets. The charges stem from an investigation which showed Daniels operated a commercial troll vessel, the F/V Pelican, on commercial fishing trips associated with Highliner Lodge out of Pelican from 2017 to 2020 and sold fish to clients directly without a fisheries business license and without completing any fish tickets. Daniels was subsequently charged with seven additional violations in 2021 for failing to imprint information on fish tickets as required and reporting sold fish as "personal use." Arraignment set in Sitka District Court.

Two cited at Sitka over improper salmon sale

On 2/6/16 Sitka Wildlife Troopers contacted Bruce Ulrich, 63, of Sitka, as he attempted to sell king salmon at Sitka Sound Seafoods. Investigation revealed Ulrich was not a valid permit holder and was attempting to sell fish that were caught by George Jackson, 75, of Sitka. Ulrich had removed the fish from the F/V Lady Savage in ANB Harbor and transported them to Sitka Sound Seafoods for sale. Only fishermen holding a valid permit may sell salmon, and a fish ticket must be completed at the time of delivery, which is the time the fish are removed from the vessel to be transported for sale. Ulrich was issued a summons for failing to possess a permit, and Jackson was issued a summons for failing to complete a fish ticket as required. Both subjects must appear in Sitka District Court.

Sitka fisherman fined in unlawful sales case

On 6/16/15 Matthew L. Wilson, 57, of Sitka, pled guilty in Sitka District Court to two misdemeanor counts each of unlawful commercial fishing practices and filing a false fish ticket. Wilson was fined $4,000 with $1,500 suspended, ordered to pay joint restitution with a separate defendant, and placed on probation for two years. Two charges of unlawful possession of commercial fish were dismissed. The case resulted from a 2014 investigation which showed Wilson sold king salmon on at least two occasions from another fisherman who was not licensed to fish commercially. Wilson also falsely reported taking the fish himself as well as misreporting the areas the fish were taken.

On 1/30/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, cited Christian Buschmann, 26, of Petersburg, for failing to provide factual catch data on a commercial fish ticket. Investigation showed Buschmann had operated commercial seine gear and retained salmon in the Hidden Falls area in July 2013, but reported the fish in another area. Buschmann was issued a summons to appear in Sitka District Court.

Investigation showed Seager power trolled in Alaska waters, as the permit holder on the F/V Mindalina, and delivered his catch to Bellingham, Wash., without first submitting a fish ticket to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Arraignment set for Sitka District Court.

Seiner fined for misreporting chum catch

On 4/9/13 Clifford Hudson pled guilty in Sitka District Court to one count of failing to provide factual information on a fish ticket. He was fined $2,500 with $1,500 suspended and ordered to pay $1,207.50 in restitution for the difference in fish tax between two areas. He also was placed on probation for one year. Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, charged Hudson on 3/4/13. Hudson failed to report seine-caught chum salmon taken in the Hidden Falls area of District 12, instead reporting the salmon were taken in another district.

On 3/4/13 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, charged Michael Mattingly, 40, of Sitka, with taking lingcod during August 2012 onboard a commercial salmon troller while the bycatch season for lingcod was closed by emergency order. Arraignment set in Sitka District Court.

On 12/14/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, cited David Vest, 36, of Ketchikan, for retaining commercially harvested undersized Dungeness crab, failing to complete a commercial fish ticket upon landing Dungeness, and unlawfully possessing undersized Dungeness. Vest was issued a summons to appear on 12/26/12 in Ketchikan District Court for arraignment.

Geoduck divers find trouble at Craig

On 11/1/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Klawock Post, cited Eric R. Larson, 32, and Morris B. Mattson, 46, both of Petersburg, for commercial fishing for geoduck clams in closed waters. Both individuals pled no contest in Craig District Court and were fined $3,000 with $1,500 suspended. The court ordered each to pay restitution of $2,000 for the illegally taken geoducks.

Cold storage nets $750 fine in fish ticket case

On 11/23/11 Coastal Cold Storage Inc., of Petersburg, was represented by Greg Einerson in Petersburg District Court. Coastal was charged with one count of failing to complete all forms required of fish buyers. The charge was the result of an Alaska Wildlife Troopers investigation that showed Coastal took possession of a load of commercial red king crab and did not begin a fish ticket at the time of delivery, as required by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Coastal pled guilty to the charge and was sentenced to a fine of $2,000 with $1,250 suspended and placed on probation for one year.

On 11/12/11 Coastal Cold Storage Inc. in Petersburg was issued a summons for failure to complete fish tickets at the time of sale or delivery. On 11/3/11 Coastal Cold Storage purchased red king crab from a local fisherman and failed to complete a fish ticket at the time of delivery. Arraignment set for 11/30/11.
