Cook Inlet EEZ firearm incident investigated

The U.S. Coast Guard reports the following to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, which is meeting this week in Anchorage.

The Coast Guard conducted coordinated surface and air patrols with NOAA OLE in the first opener of the Cook Inlet EEZ Salmon Fishery. The Coast Guard completed 17 at-sea boardings and 05 hours of C-130 patrol. Notably, the aircrew observed one instance of a firearm being pointed in the direction of a deployed net and vectored a cutter with embarked NOAA OLE agents to the vessel for investigation.

Wrangell man charged with wasting salmon

On 8/1/24 Brandon Kenfield, 29, of Wrangell, was issued a citation by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Wrangell Post, for wasting commercial-caught salmon. Kenfield has a mandatory court date set for 9/10/24 in the Ketchikan courthouse.

Two cited in another Area M salmon chucking case

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Alaska Peninsula
Type: Failing to retain all caught salmon
On 7/26/23 Alaska Wildlife Troopers operating off the Kodiak-based patrol vessel Stimson contacted Colin Kilin, 22, and Ignaty Basargin, 19, both of Homer, while onboard the F/V Freelancer in False Pass. The crew of the Freelancer had been previously observed by troopers discarding salmon while they were commercial fishing in the vicinity of Cape Lazaref. Both Kilin and Basargin were issued summonses to appear in court for failing to retain all caught salmon.

Third case of Area M salmon chucking reported

Location: Alaska Peninsula
Type: Failing to retain all caught salmon
On 7/25/23 Alaska Wildlife Troopers operating off the Kodiak-based patrol vessel Stimson contacted Craig Danielson, 59, of Port Angeles, Wash., and Bruce L. McDonald, 68, of Port Townsend, Wash., while they were drift gillnet fishing in the Port Heiden area onboard the F/V Pixie. The crew of the Pixie had been previously observed by troopers discarding salmon while they were commercial fishing in the Cape Lutke area. Both Danielson and McDonald were issued summonses to appear in court for failing to retain all caught salmon.

Three charged in another case of salmon chucking

Location: Alaska Peninsula
Type: Failing to retain all caught salmon
On 7/13/23 Alaska Wildlife Troopers operating off the Kodiak-based patrol vessel Cama'i contacted Jose Medina, 54, Thrasher Medina, 26, and Nick Gould, 28, all of King Cove. Jose Medina was identified as the permit holder for the commercial setnet fishing vessel Sea Wolf, while Thrasher Medina and Gould were identified as the crewmembers of the vessel. Prior to contacting the crew of the Sea Wolf, troopers observed salmon being thrown back into the water by the crew of the fishing vessel while they were commercial fishing in East Anchor Cove. All members of the vessel were issued summonses to appear in court for failing to retain all caught salmon. Arraignment is set for 8/24/23 in the Anchorage court.

Gillnetter charged with chucking salmon

On 6/15/23 Alaska Wildlife Troopers operating off the Kodiak-based patrol vessel Cama'i issued Gregory Reutov, 41, of Homer, a summons to appear in court for failing to retain all caught salmon. Reutov was contacted on the fishing vessel Sinai while commercial drift gillnet fishing for salmon in the Unimak District of the Alaska Peninsula Area. Prior to contacting the vessel, troopers observed salmon being thrown back into the water.

Bristol Bay setnetter charged with waste of salmon

Location: Dillingham
Type: Waste of salmon
On 8/14/20 Alaska Wildlife Troopers opened an investigation into waste of salmon taken in a commercial setnet at Clarks Point. The responsible permit holder was identified as Desmond Hurley, 31, of Dillingham. Investigation showed Hurley was not physically present at the fishing site during operation of his gear, he employed unlicensed crew, and 131 salmon from his net were wasted. On 11/30/20 Hurley was issued citations for waste of salmon, permit holder not physically present at the fishing site, and employing unlicensed crew. Arraignment set for 1/4/21 in Dillingham District Court.

Kotzebue gillnetter charged with waste of salmon

Type: Waste of salmon
On 8/6/14 Roswell Schaeffer Sr., 64, of Kotzebue, was issued a summons to appear in Kotzebue District Court for waste of salmon. Investigation revealed Schaeffer abandoned a half shackle of commercial gillnet with 103 salmon in it.

On 3/13/13 William Wood, 53, of North Pole, was cited by Fairbanks Wildlife Troopers for selling 50 pounds of salmon he caught in the Cooper River personal use fishery with a dipnet. Arraignment set for 4/12/13 in Fairbanks District Court.

Troopers cite Southeast fisherman, seize his catch

On 7/15/12 at approximately 1600 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers aboard the patrol vessel Sentry contacted Joel Randrup, 46, of Petersburg, who was observed fishing 350 feet inside the closed portion of Limestone Inlet. Randrup was issued a citation for commercial fishing in closed waters, and 4,502 pounds of salmon was seized. He must appear on 7/26/12 in Juneau District Court.

On 6/30/12 Herb E. Johnsen, 68, of Coupeville, Wash., was cited by Bristol Bay Wildlife Troopers for commercial fishing aboard the F/V Maria J in closed waters in the Naknek-Kvichak District. Arraignment set for 7/13/12 in Naknek District Court.

Salmon troller charged with gear violation

On 6/22/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, issued a summons to Thomas George, 56, of Klawock. He was charged with operating a commercial salmon power troll vessel with hand troll gear onboard. This charge has a mandatory court appearance in Ketchikan District Court.

Yakutat salmon troller fined, placed on probation

On 6/14/12 in Yakutat District Court, Frank Deveraux, 63, of Yakutat, was convicted and sentenced to a $3,000 fine with $2,900 suspended and placed on probation for one year for commercial fishing in closed waters in Yakutat Bay on 3/22/12.

Authorities write 33 subsistence citations, seize 21 nets and 1,100 pounds of salmon on Kuskokwim

Type: Subsistence fish closed period
On 6/20/12, starting at about 1100 hours, a joint enforcement effort between Alaska Wildlife Troopers and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officers was conducted on the Lower Kuskokwim River. During the course of the effort 33 citations were written, 21 nets were seized and 1,100 pounds of salmon were seized. All offenses were for subsistence salmon fishing during a closed period and subsistence fishing with illegal gear. The seized salmon were donated to local charities. All of the contacts made during this effort were nonconfrontational.

Three accused of illegal salmon trolling at Yakutat

On 3/22/12 at approximately 1256 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Yakutat contacted Oliver Hokanson, 47, of Yakutat, aboard the F/V Falcon in Yakutat Bay. Investigation revealed that Hokanson was commercial salmon trolling in closed waters in Yakutat Bay. Hokanson was issued a summons to appear on 4/12/12 in Yakutat District Court.

On 3/22/12 at approximately 1309 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Yakutat contacted Loren Clark, 42, of Yakutat, aboard a salmon power troller in Yakutat Bay. Investigation revealed that Clark was commercial salmon trolling in closed waters in Yakutat Bay. Clark was issued a summons to appear on 4/12/12 in Yakutat District Court.

On 3/22/12 at approximately 1357 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Yakutat contacted Frank Deveraux, 63, of Yakutat, aboard the F/V Sheryl in Yakutat Bay. Investigation revealed that Deveraux was commercial salmon trolling in closed waters in Yakutat Bay. Deveraux was issued a summons to appear on 4/12/12 in Yakutat District Court.

Pelican processor cited over tardy fish tickets

On 1/28/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, cited Deborah Spencer, 46, of Pelican, for failing to submit fish tickets for troll-caught salmon within seven days after landing. Spencer is the co-owner of Cross Sound Seafoods and unintentionally submitted multiple tickets more than three months late. Arraignment set for 2/21/12 in Sitka District Court.

On 1/1/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, cited Gary P. Mulligan, 63, of Port Alexander, the permit holder onboard the F/V Phyllis Ann, for failing to submit commercial salmon fish tickets within seven days. Arraignment set for 1/24/12 in Sitka District Court.

Salmon troller, crewman fined after guilty pleas

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Type: Update — commercial fish closed season
On 11/7/11 Thomas A. George, 56, and Jared B. Barlow, 37, both of Klawock, pled guilty to one count each of commercial salmon trolling in a closed season. George, the permit holder onboard the F/V High Pockets, was fined $10,000 with $6,000 suspended and placed on probation for three years. Barlow, the crewman onboard the vessel, was fined $7,500 with $5,000 suspended and placed on probation for one year. Charges for unlawful possession of fish were dismissed as part of the agreement.
