Authorities write 33 subsistence citations, seize 21 nets and 1,100 pounds of salmon on Kuskokwim

Location: Lower Kuskokwim River
Type: Subsistence fish closed period
On 6/20/12, starting at about 1100 hours, a joint enforcement effort between Alaska Wildlife Troopers and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officers was conducted on the Lower Kuskokwim River. During the course of the effort 33 citations were written, 21 nets were seized and 1,100 pounds of salmon were seized. All offenses were for subsistence salmon fishing during a closed period and subsistence fishing with illegal gear. The seized salmon were donated to local charities. All of the contacts made during this effort were nonconfrontational.

On 7/13/11 Bethel Wildlife Troopers on a routine commercial fisheries float plane patrol near Napakiak cited Nicholai Steven, 60, of Oscarville, for commercial fishing in a closed period. Arraignment set for 7/25/11 in Bethel District Court.

Troopers issue citations on Kuskokwim, Yukon

Location: Kuskokwim River, subdistrict W-1A
Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 7/7/11 during a routine commercial fisheries float plane patrol in Kuskokwim subdistrict W-1A near Akiachak, Bethel Wildlife Troopers cited the following individuals for fishing in a closed period: William J. Guy, 35, of Kwethluk; Anita Nicholai, 32, of Kwethluk; Nelson T. Kinegak, 28, of Akiachak; and David E. David, 69, of Kwethluk.

Location: Yukon River, District Y-2
Type: Commercial fish closed season
On 7/7/11 Aniak Wildlife Troopers on routine fisheries patrol via float plane cited William Guidry, 48, of Pitkas Point, for commercial fishing in a closed period. Arraignment set for 8/2/11 in St. Marys District Court.

Kusko gillnetter accused of fishing in closed period

On 7/5/11, during a routine commercial fisheries patrol on the Kuskokwim River near Napaskiak, Bethel Wildlife Troopers cited Georgiann G. Wassillie, 35, of Akiachak, for commercial fishing in a closed period. Arraignment set for 7/20/11 in Bethel District Court.

Three fishermen fined after guilty pleas at Bethel

From the Alaska State Troopers:

On 7/12/10 the following persons pled guilty at arraignment at the Bethel court and received sentences:

• Albert H. Kernak, 67, of Napakiak, commercial fish closed period, $1,000 fine with $500 suspended, one year year probation

• Raymond M. Evon, 53, of Bethel, commercial fish closed period, $1,000 fine with $500 suspended, one year probation

• John J. Mojin, 61, of Bethel, commercial fish closed period, $1,000 fine with $500 suspended, one year probation

Lack of child PFD nets Kusko fisherman a ticket

Type: No PFD
On 7/2/10 during a routine commercial fisheries patrol in Kuskokwim District W-4 near Quinhagak, Bethel Wildlife Troopers cited Joseph Brown, 68, of Kongiganak, for no personal floatation device under 13 after observing an 8-year-old child in an open boat during commercial fishing operations. Bail set at $100.

Troopers cite three on Yukon, Kuskokwim

Location: Lower Yukon River
Type: Commercial fishing violations
On 6/29/10, while patrolling a District 1 commercial fishery on the Lower Yukon River via float plane, Alaska Wildlife Troopers in St. Marys issued a citation to Hermus Aparezuk, 41, of Kotlik, for failing to properly identify his commercial fishing gear. He also received a summons for obstructing more than half the width of a waterway with his driftnet.

On 6/28/10 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Raymond Evon, 53, of Bethel, for commercial fishing during a closed period. Troopers observed Evon with his net still in the water after the commercial subdistrict 1-B closure. He was given a court date.

Location: Napakiak
Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 6/28/10 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Albert Kernak, 67, of Napakiak, for commercial fishing during a closed period. Troopers saw him with a net in the water after the closure of Kuskokwim subdistrict 1-B near Napakiak. Kernak was given a court date.

Troopers make a few Kuskokwim cases

Type: Vessel ID numbers, registration
On 6/25/10 Bethel Wildlife Troopers on routine commercial fisheries patrol in Kuskokwim subdistrict W-1A near Bethel cited Kurtis George, 26, of Akiak, for failure to display vessel ID numbers and failure to register a powerboat. Bail set at $200 and $50 respectively.

Location: Kuskokwim subdistrict W-1A
Type: Unlicensed crewmember, vessel ID numbers
On 6/25/10 Bethel Wildlife Troopers on routine commercial fisheries patrol in Kuskokwim subdistrict W-1A near Akiachak cited Frank Chingliak, 55, of Akiachak, for employing an unlicensed crewmember, and failure to display vessel numbers. Bail set at $250 and $200 respectively.

Type: No crewmember license
On 6/25/10 Bethel Wildlife Troopers on routine commercial fisheries patrol in Kuskokwim subdistrict W-1A near Akiachak cited Jeffrey Chingliak, 27, of Akiachak, for not having a commercial crewmember license while participating in commercial fishing operations. Bail set at $250.

On 6/25/10 Bethel Wildlife Troopers on routine commercial fisheries patrol in Kuksokwim subdistrict W-1A near Bethel summonsed John Mojin, 61, of Bethel, for commercial fishing during a closed period. Arraignment scheduled for 7/5/10 in Bethel District Court.

Two Kuskokwim cases

Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 7/6/09 Bethel Wildlife Troopers on a routine commercial fisheries patrol in Kuskokwim District W-4 summonsed Gary A. Sharp, age 49, of Quinhagak, into Bethel District Court on one count of commercial fishing during a closed period. Sharp is scheduled for arraignment in Bethel Court on 7/22/09.

Location: Quinhagak
Type: Employ unlicensed crewmember
On 7/6/09 Bethel Wildlife Troopers on a routine commercial fisheries patrol in Kuskokwim District W-4 cited Nicolai W. Mark, age 43, of Quinhagak, for employing an unlicensed crewmember. Bail set at $250.

On 6/25/09 Bethel Wildlife Troopers on a routine commercial fisheries patrol in Kuskokwim Bay, near Goodnews Bay, cited Daniel Smith, age 22, of Goodnews Bay, for no PFD. Bail: $150.00.

Some Kuskokwim cases

Location: Kuskokwim District W-4, Quinhagak
Type: Vessel identification, unmarked gear, no PFDs
On 6/15/09 Bethel Wildlife Troopers on routine commercial fisheries patrol in Kuskokwim District W-4 near Quinhagak cited Henry Mark, age 48, of Palmer, for failure to display vessel identification numbers. Bail: $200.00. James Williams, age 32, of Quinhagak, was cited for failure to mark gear. Bail: $200.00. Fannie Joshua, age 58, of Anchorage, was cited for no PFD. Bail: $100.00. Norman Jimmie, age 29, of Tuntutuliak, was cited for no PFD. Bail: $100.00.

Location: Quinhagak
Type: Fail to obtain crewmember license
On 6/15/09 Aniak Wildlife Troopers contacted Rachael Igkurak, age 53, of Kwigillingok, during the District 4 Kuskokwim Bay commercial salmon fishery. Investigation revealed Igkurak was assisting in commercial fishing without a valid crewmember license. Igkurak was cited with bail set at $260.
