Southeast crabber convicted, forfeits $88K catch

Location: Petersburg
Type: Conviction — crabbing violations
On 9/18/12 Jay Thomassen, the permit holder on the F/V Angelette, was convicted of two misdemeanor counts. The charges were the result of an Alaska Wildlife Troopers investigation that showed Thomassen committed several commercial fishing violations during the 2012 golden king crab season. Thomassen pled guilty to one count of fishing in closed waters and one count of retaining undersized golden king crab. He was ordered to pay $6,000 and forfeit his catch valued at $88,222.20 to the state of Alaska.

Southeast crabber draws 215-day jail sentence

Location: Juneau
Type: Sentencing — crab violations, contempt of court
On 8/2/12 James Royal Seymour, 36, of Southeast Alaska, was sentenced in Juneau District Court on a total of eight separate cases involving crimes committed between 2007 and 2011. Included in the crimes were multiple commercial crab violations in Hoonah, Petersburg and Juneau. As a result of failing to appear for multiple court hearings, Seymour also was charged with contempt of court, failure to appear and violating conditions of release. Seymour also had several petitions to revoke his probation filed. In all, Seymour was sentenced to serve 215 days in jail. Seymour has been held at the Ketchikan Correctional Center since May 10, after he was arrested on several outstanding warrants. At that time, Seymour was observed by an off-duty wildlife trooper at the swimming pool and later arrested by Ketchikan city police officers. Seymour commercially fished from the F/V Loyal Lady.

A trio of cases from Southeast Alaska

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Juneau
Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 7/26/12 Robert D. Dickinson, 69, of Bellingham, Wash., was issued a summons for operating a commercial gillnet during a closed period in District 11B. He was given an arraignment date of 8/15/12 in Juneau District Court.

Location: Juneau
Type: Commercial fish closed season
On 7/26/12 Larry "Jev" Shelton, 70, of Juneau, was cited for operating a commercial gillnet during a closed season and for having obscured Alaska Department of Fish and Game numbers on his vessel. Shelton was given an arraignment date of 8/8/12 in Juneau District Court for the closed period summons, and was issued a $200 citation for the obscured numbers.

Location: Sitka
Type: Conviction — undersized king salmon
On 7/24/12 Peter G. Krovina, 63, of Sitka, pled guilty to one count of retaining an undersized king salmon during the commercial summer troll opening. Krovina was fined $1,000 with $500 suspended, and was ordered to pay $150 restitution for the undersized fish. He also forfeited the fish, and was placed on probation for one year.

Six Southeast seiners accused of illegal fishing

Type: Commercial fish closed period
On 7/19/12 the following permit holders were cited for operating commercial salmon seines during a closed period:
• Patrick L. O'Neil, 59, of Lopez Island, Wash., on the F/V Saint Janet
• Nick Olney-Miller, 35, of Sitka, on the F/V Lucy O
• Delbert B. Kadake, 50, of Kake, on the F/V Jade Ann
• Jeremy C. Jensen, 37, of Petersburg, on the F/V Harvester
• Frank Wright Jr., 63, of Hoonah, on the F/V Vagabond Queen
• Christian W. Buschmann, 25, of Petersburg, on the F/V Ascension
All six men were given an arraignment date of 9/5/12 in Juneau District Court.

Troopers dispense tickets to geoduck harvesters

Type: Tagging violation
On 1/27/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted and summonsed Marc Reynolds, 54, of Ketchikan, aboard the F/V Tsunami for failing to properly tag his containers of commercially harvested geoducks. A mandatory court appearance was set for 2/11/11 in Craig District Court.

Type: Tagging violation
On 1/27/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted and summonsed Jeremy Leighton, 40, of Ketchikan, aboard the F/V Reliance for failing to properly tag his containers of commercially harvested geoducks. A mandatory court appearance was set for 2/11/11 in Craig District Court.

Type: Sticker
On 1/27/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted and cited Jason McGinley, 37, of Ketchikan, for failing to have a current Alaska Department of Fish and Game sticker attached to the vessel's number plate while commercial diving for geoducks onboard the F/V Clearlight. A citation was issued with a bail of $110 and an optional court appearance was set for 2/11/11 in Craig District Court.

Troopers make variety of cases in Southeast

Location: Seymour Canal
Type: No crew license
On 7/25/10 Michael A. File, 44, of Petersburg, was cited for employing an unlicensed crewmember onboard his seine vessel the F/V Siren. Jordan D. Monroe, 18, of Petersburg, was cited for failing to have a valid 2010 crewmember license in possession. An 11-year-old crewmember was not issued a citation, but was actively participating as a crewmember onboard the vessel as well and did not have a valid 2010 crew license. Bail is set at $260 with arraignment in Juneau District Court.

Location: Gilbert Bay
Type: Unlicensed commercial vessel
On 7/27/10 Daniel V. Zeik, 44, of Petersburg, was issued a citation for operating a commercial vessel that was not registered. Bail is set at $210 with arraignment in Juneau District Court.

Location: Stephens Passage
Type: Undersized mesh
On 7/27/10 Terry J. Smith, 55, of Petersburg, was issued a summons for operating a commercial drift gillnet with undersized mesh. Investigation found that the first 10 fathoms of the net consisted of 5-inch mesh. The minimum size requirement for that area is 6-inch mesh. Smith was assigned an arraignment date of 8/26/10 in Juneau District Court.

Location: Port Camden
Type: Fail to register commercial Dungeness boat
On 7/30/10 Jack Lyons, 57, of Petersburg, was issued a summons for operating commercial Dungeness crab gear from a vessel that was not registered for Dungeness crab fishing. Lyons was given an arraignment date of 8/12/10 in Petersburg District Court.
