On 7/27/11 Aaron C. Place, 38, of Juneau, was charged with two counts of operating a commercial drift gillnet in closed waters. Place was given an arraignment date of 8/9/11 in Juneau District Court.

On 7/27/11 Gunnar K. Noreen, 55, of Douglas, was cited for operating a commercial gillnet with mesh smaller than legally allowed. He was given an arraignment date of 8/10/11 in Juneau District Court.

On 7/27/11 Jed Bickford-Harding, 35, of Gustavus, was issued two citations for operating a commercial drift gillnet in closed waters. One charge was based on observations made on 7/24/11 near Point Bishop and the other was based on observations made on 6/26/11 near Benjamin Island. Bickford-Harding was given an arraignment date of 8/11/11 in Juneau District Court.

On 7/27/11 Christopher J. Place, 39, of Douglas, was cited on four counts of operating a commercial drift gillnet in closed waters. Three counts are from events observed on 7/24/11 near Point Bishop and one count is from events observed on 6/26/11 near Benjamin Island. Place operates the F/V Mara. He was given an arraignment date of 8/9/11 in Juneau District Court.

On 7/24/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers observed the F/V Seniavin Sun operated by Ryan Gullufsen, 36, of Juneau, commercial gillnet fishing over the Point Bishop line on three separate occasions. On 7/28/11 Gullufsen was issued three misdemeanor citations for fishing in closed waters.

Petersburg fisherman fined $500 after gillnet plea

Location: Juneau
Type: Undersized mesh
On 9/8/10 Terry J. Smith, 55, of Petersburg, pled guilty in Juneau District Court to one count of operating a commercial drift gillnet with undersized mesh. Smith was fined $500. The charge originated when Alaska Wildlife Troopers found that the beginning 10 fathoms of Smith's driftnet had undersized mesh. The inspection was conducted during routine patrol near Circle Point in District 11B.

Troopers make variety of cases in Southeast

Type: No crew license
On 7/25/10 Michael A. File, 44, of Petersburg, was cited for employing an unlicensed crewmember onboard his seine vessel the F/V Siren. Jordan D. Monroe, 18, of Petersburg, was cited for failing to have a valid 2010 crewmember license in possession. An 11-year-old crewmember was not issued a citation, but was actively participating as a crewmember onboard the vessel as well and did not have a valid 2010 crew license. Bail is set at $260 with arraignment in Juneau District Court.
Location: Gilbert Bay
Type: Unlicensed commercial vessel
On 7/27/10 Daniel V. Zeik, 44, of Petersburg, was issued a citation for operating a commercial vessel that was not registered. Bail is set at $210 with arraignment in Juneau District Court.
Location: Stephens Passage
Type: Undersized mesh
On 7/27/10 Terry J. Smith, 55, of Petersburg, was issued a summons for operating a commercial drift gillnet with undersized mesh. Investigation found that the first 10 fathoms of the net consisted of 5-inch mesh. The minimum size requirement for that area is 6-inch mesh. Smith was assigned an arraignment date of 8/26/10 in Juneau District Court.

Type: Fail to register commercial Dungeness boat
On 7/30/10 Jack Lyons, 57, of Petersburg, was issued a summons for operating commercial Dungeness crab gear from a vessel that was not registered for Dungeness crab fishing. Lyons was given an arraignment date of 8/12/10 in Petersburg District Court.

Vessel captain fined for improper opilio gear

Type: Update — improper crab pots
On 3/3/10 John Duane Nes, 38, of Edmonds, Wash., pled guilty in the Unalaska District Court to the charge of improper mesh size on his opilio crab pot gear. Nes, who is the captain of the F/V Aleutian Spray, was fined $3,000 with $2,000 suspended and placed on one year probation.
