$20,000 for information in sea lion shootings

Alaska Wildlife Troopers are assisting our federal partners at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in investigating the illegal shootings of multiple sea lions and seals in the Copper River Delta. NOAA is offering up to $20,000 for information leading to civil or criminal penalties for those responsible for the deaths. Three Copper River fishermen cited

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Copper River flats
Type: Commercial fish closed waters
On 5/24/21 Alaska Wildlife Troopers observed and subsequently contacted the F/V Zephyr for fishing in closed waters. Investigation revealed the vessel was commercial fishing with a drift gillnet in closed waters, outside of the Copper River District. The operator and permit holder, Jennifer Nakao, 36, of Seward, was issued a citation for commercial fishing in closed waters.

On 5/24/21 Alaska Wildlife Troopers observed and subsequently contacted the F/V Sewak for fishing in closed waters. Investigation revealed the vessel was commercial fishing with a drift gillnet in closed waters, outside of the Copper River District and inside regulatory closed waters. The operator and permit holder, Matthew Adams, 27, of Cordova, was issued a citation for commercial fishing in closed waters.

On 5/24/21 Alaska Wildlife Troopers observed and subsequently contacted the F/V Julia Rose for fishing in closed waters. Investigation revealed the vessel was commercial fishing with a drift gillnet in closed waters, outside of the Copper River District and inside regulatory closed waters. The operator and permit holder, Nathan Widmann, 28, of Cordova, was issued a citation for commercial fishing in closed waters.

Cordova man fished in closed waters, troopers say

On 6/13/14 Cordova Wildlife Troopers cited Gregory Mans, 39, of Cordova, for commercial fishing in closed waters of the Copper River flats on 6/7/14 aboard the F/V Copper Dream. Arraignment set for 7/30/14 in Cordova District Court.

Troopers cite Copper River salmon gillnetter

On 5/15/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, cited Clifford M. Johns, 56, of Bothell, Wash., and the F/V Dances with Clams, for operating a drift gillnet in waters closed by regulation (Chinook salmon inside closure area). Arraignment set in Cordova District Court.

Troopers bust four more Copper River fishermen

On 5/26/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Brent Davis, 43, of Cordova, for commercial fishing during a closed period. The F/V Gizella was observed fishing during a closed period on 5/21/12 by state aircraft. Arraignment set for 6/27/12 in Cordova District Court.

On 5/24/12 airborne Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet during a closed period. Investigation revealed that the vessel was the F/V Miss Dana, operated by Robert L. Nelson, 49, of Soldotna. Nelson was summoned to appear for arraignment on 6/27/12 in Cordova District Court.

On 5/24/12 airborne Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet during a closed period. Investigation revealed that the vessel was the F/V Inspiration, operated by Gerald J. McCune, 36, of Cordova. McCune was summoned to appear for arraignment on 6/27/12 in Cordova District Court.

On 5/24/12 airborne Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet during a closed period. Investigation revealed that the vessel was the F/V Salavey, operated by Kiril Kuzmin, 32, of Oklee, Minn. Kuzmin was summoned to appear for arraignment on 6/27/12 in Cordova District Court.

Two charged with illegal fishing at Copper River

On 5/24/12 airborne Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet during a closed period. The investigation revealed the vessel to be the Remora operated by Pete D. Hoepfner of Cordova. Subsequently he was issued a summons with an arraignment date of 6/13/12 in Cordova District Court.

The investigation revealed the vessel to be the Shiloh operated by William A. Bailey III of Cordova. Subsequently he was issued a summons with an arraignment date of 6/13/12 in Cordova District Court.

On 1/25/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Pavil Reutov, 28, of Homer, for commercial fishing during a closed period during the 2011 fishing season. Arraignment scheduled for 2/29/12 in Cordova District Court.

On 1/25/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Monty Stephens, 65, of Palo Cedro, Calif., for seining during a closed period during the 2011 fishing season. Arraignment scheduled for 2/29/12 in Cordova District Court.

On 6/28/11 Timothy E. Dillon, 59, of Cordova, operator and permit holder on the F/V Smoky Point, was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, for operating a drift gillnet during a closed period. Arraignment was set for 8/17/11 in Cordova District Court.

On 7/2/10 Cordova Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Kris Phillips, 45, of Cordova, for commercial fishing 28 minutes after the Copper River flats closed at 0700 hours. Arraignment is scheduled for 8/4/10 in Cordova District Court.

On 7/3/10 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Joe Reutov, 21, of Molalla, Ore., for commercial fishing in closed waters of Prince William Sound aboard the F/V Headache. Arraignment is scheduled for 8/4/10 in Cordova District Court.

Troopers ticket two Copper River tender crewmen

Type: No crew license
On 4/17/10 Chester E. Bushnell, 32, and Stephanie R. Tarabochia, 31, both from Warrenton, Ore., were cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, for commercial fishing as crewmembers aboard the F/V Majestik tender without having a 2010 crew license in their possession as required. Bail was set at $260 for each of them, in the District Court of Cordova.

Sleep costs Copper River fisherman his net

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Cordova — Copper River Flats
Type: Gillnet operations violation
On 08-18-09, at approximately 1300 hours, David J. Totemoff Jr., age 42, of Anchorage, contacted Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Cordova Post to report that he had lost his drift gillnet while fishing in the Copper River Flats area. Investigation revealed that Totemoff had set his net and went to sleep for approximately 7 hours. When he awoke he discovered that his net had separated from his vessel and was missing. Totemoff was charged for not personally supervising the immediate operation of his gillnet and was summoned to appear in Cordova district court for arraignment on 11-25-09.

Copper River gillnetter pays dearly for violation

Here's a follow-up from the Alaska State Troopers on a poaching case we first reported back on July 1:

Location: Cordova
Type: Commercial fish closed period, waste of salmon
On 7/02/09 Nikolai P. Reutov, 39 yoa, of Homer, pled guilty in Anchorage District Court to the charges of commercial fishing closed period and waste of salmon. Information from a commercial fisherman was instrumental in this investigation. Investigation revealed that Reutov was the skipper of the F/V Sushi, a 33-foot bowpicker. Reutov admitted to commercial fishing during a closed period and waste of salmon on the Copper River flats. For commercial fishing closed period Reutov received a $15,000 fine with $5,000 suspended and 90 days in jail with 90 suspended. On the waste of salmon he received a $500 fine. Reutov further forfeited his catch of the day on 6/21/09 of approximately $900 and his vessel the F/V Sushi along with fishing nets involved. Reutov was given the ability to purchase his vessel back at a price of $20,000. Reutov was to pay $100 in court fees and was placed on probation for 6 years. The Alaska Wildlife Troopers again would like to thank the concerned commercial fisherman involved.

Illegal Copper River fishing charged

Type: Commercial fish closed period, illegal possession, waste of
salmon
On 6/21/09 the Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Cordova were given information and photographs of the F/V Sushi fishing eight hours prior to the opener on the Copper River flats. A search warrant was granted for the F/V Sushi, a 33-foot bowpicker, ADF&G #75459. The boat was located fishing on the west side of Prince William Sound and a boarding was conducted. The skipper of the F/V Sushi, a Nikolai P. Reutov, 39 yoa, of Homer, was interviewed. Reutov stated that he was seen and photographed on the night in question. A full confession and account of the facts was given. The search/seizure warrant was executed for the F/V Sushi. On 6/26/09 Reutov agreed to drive his boat back to Cordova were it was seized and pulled out of the water. On 6/30/09 Reutov was charged with commercial fishing during a closed period, illegal possession and waste of salmon. The arraignment date was set for 7/22/09 in the District Court of Cordova.

On 5/14/09, Jose Rubio, 66, of Cordova was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova post for commercial fishing on the Copper River Flats aboard the F/V Risky Business, ADF&G #64513. Rubio didn't have his buoy properly marked with his ADF&G# as required. Rubio's arraignment date was set for 5/27/09 in the District Court of Cordova.

Cordova crackdown

On 5/15/09 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova post cited Kevin Corcoran, age 53, of Cordova, for failing to record commercial fish taken for personal use on his fish ticket. Arraignment is scheduled for 5/27/09 in Cordova District Court.

On 5/15/09 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova post cited Leslie Allen, age 40, of Valdez, for failing to record commercial fish taken for personal use on his fish ticket. Arraignment is scheduled for 5/27/09 in Cordova District Court.

On 5/11/09 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Brian S. Asplund, age 49, of Circle, for commercial fishing during a closed period in the Wally Noerenberg Hatchery terminal harvest area. Arraignment is scheduled for 5/27/09 in Cordova District Court.

On 5/14/09 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited William Bailey, age 63, of Cordova, for operating F/V Shiloh without a 2009 vessel license or number plate on board. Arraignment is scheduled for 5/27/09 in Cordova District Court.

On 5/14/09 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Iona Reutov, age 23, of Wasilla, for operating a drift gillnet without picture I.D. onboard. Arraignment is scheduled for 5/27/09 in Cordova District Court.

On 5/14/09 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Ilia Kuzmin, age 49, of Stayton, Ore., for operating the F/V Teremok without contrasting 12-inch ADF&G numbers. Arraignment is scheduled for 5/27/09 in Cordova District Court.
