Troopers cite four Prince William Sound fishermen

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Valdez
Type: No permit
On 5/30/11 Nikolai Kuzmin, 19, of Homer, was contacted by the Valdez wildlife trooper near Esther Rock, western Prince William Sound. The investigation revealed that Kuzmin was operating a commercial drift gillnet and in possession of commercially caught salmon without a valid Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission permit. Kuzmin was issued citations for commercial fishing without a permit and other infractions, and 1,300 pounds of fish were seized. Arraignment scheduled for 6/29/11 in Cordova District Court.

Type: Commercial fish closed waters
On 6/6/11 Avtonom Kusnetsov, 30, of Wasilla, was cited by the Valdez wildlife trooper for commercial fishing in the closed waters of the Esther subdistrict. Kusnetsov was documented in Esther Passage fishing in closed waters by the Valdez PST while on a stakeout. Arraignment scheduled for 6/29/11 in Valdez District Court.

On 6/6/11 Simeao Kusnetsov, 28, of Wasilla, was cited by the Valdez wildlife trooper for commercial fishing in the closed waters of the Esther subdistrict. Kusnetsov was documented in Esther Passage fishing in closed waters by the Valdez PST while on a stakeout. Kusnetsov also was cited by the Valdez trooper for the same offense near Esther Rock on 5/30/11. Arraignment scheduled for 6/29/11 in Valdez District Court.

On 6/6/11 Bryan Haney, 27, of Cordova, was cited by the Valdez wildlife trooper for commercial fishing in the closed waters of the Esther subdistrict, western Prince William Sound. Arraignment scheduled for 6/29/11 in Cordova District Court.

  1. Kuzmin isn't the only Russian fishing area E without a permit. Just the first to be caught in a while. the big question is, who was selling his fish for him? It's common to see a group of Russians together at the end of a period and one of them selling way more bags of fish than is reasonable for the fishing that period. Maybe some high altitude surveilence is in order. Watch for groups of boats coming together at the end of a period, and during the period for thAt matter.
