Troopers crack down on herring pounders

Location: Vixen Inlet
Type: Failure to release herring
On 4/20/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Donald Durgan, 62, June Durgan, 57, and Ronald Durgan, all of Craig, for unlawfully retaining herring in a herring pound by not releasing the fish as required. Arraignment set for 5/21/14 in Ketchikan District Court.

Type: Failure to release herring
On 4/20/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Michael Demmert, 28, Shelton Maves, 62, Titus Winrod, 32, and James Quigley, 52, all of Craig. The four were participating as permit holders in the Ernest Sound spawn-on-kelp commercial fishery. Investigation revealed they unlawfully retained herring in a herring pound by not releasing the fish as required. Arraignment set for 5/21/14 in Ketchikan District Court.

Type: Unlawful retention of herring
On 4/20/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted Shon Landon, 34, of Washington state, who was participating as a permit holder in the Ernest Sound spawn-on-kelp commercial fishery. Investigation revealed Landon unlawfully retained herring in a herring pound for more than six days. Landon was issued a summons to appear for arraignment in Ketchikan District Court.

Four herring pound permit holders cited

Location: Craig
Type: Failure to release herring
On 4/5/13 at approximately 0103 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Klawock Post, conducted commercial fishing checks on the herring pound grounds near Craig. Investigation revealed that captured herring had not been released as required by the permit holders on the F/V Andy Sea. Permit holders Bradford Scudder, 55, Andrew Scudder, 24, Matthew Donovan, 27, and Lauchlin Leach, 40, were each issued a summons to appear in Craig District Court.

Type: Fail to mark commercial herring pound or web support
On 9/19/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, issued citations after investigation revealed the following persons failed to mark herring pound equipment during this spring's Hoonah Sound spawn-on-kelp fishery. Each defendant is scheduled to appear for arraignment on 9/27/11 in Sitka District Court.

Three herring pounders net $300 fines after pleas

Location: Sitka
Type: Update — fail to mark herring pound or web support
On 9/13/11 the following defendants pled no contest in Sitka District Court to failing to mark commercial herring pounds or web support. The charges resulted from commercial herring pound activities during April and May. Each defendant was fined $600 with $300 suspended and placed on one-year probation not to commit commercial fishing violations.

On 5/23/11 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, filed charges in Sitka District Court against Matthew Carle, 61, Arlene Carle, 67, Jonathan Carle, 37, and Tony Sanderson, 48, all of Hydaburg, for failing to mark herring pound equipment as required by regulation. On 6/7/11 Jonathan Carle and Arlene Carle pled no contest. Both were fined $600 with $300 suspended and are on probation for one year.

Six fined at Sitka for herring pound violations

Type: Herring pound violations
On 6/15/10 Sitka Wildlife Troopers charged Rudolph K. Johanson, 73, David A. Walker, 36, James A. Tissychy, 38, Rachel A. Williams, 60, and Amy Majors, 24, all of Ketchikan, and Archie W. Demmert, 49, of Klawock, for failing to maintain herring pounds in original configuration. Investigation on 5/14/10 near Emmons Island in Hoonah Sound revealed each permit holder's herring pound webbing had been removed from its original configuration before allowed by regulation. Regulations require the pounds and webbing to remain in place for four weeks after harvest, to allow herring eggs deposited on the gear to hatch. On 12/1/10 all six defendants entered guilty pleas in Sitka District Court. Each defendant was fined $2,500 with $1,250 suspended and placed on probation for a period of one year.
