Death reported on fish tender near Ketchikan

According to Alaska Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission records, the person named in this item owned the F/V Pacific Queen, a 72-foot wood-hulled tender built in 1938.

Type: Death investigation
On 7/10/10 at approximately 1021 hours, the Alaska State Troopers in Ketchikan received a report of a death onboard the F/V Pacific Queen at Foggy Bay, approximately 45 miles south of Ketchikan. Investigation revealed 45-year-old Brian E. Sheldon, of Seattle, had passed away between the hours of 0700 and 1000 on 7/10/10 from what appears to be natural causes. The state medical examiner's office was contacted and an autopsy will be conducted. No indication of foul play was found. The next of kin have been notified.

Troopers, Sitka police nab hatchery poachers

On 7/10/10 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, observed two males in a vessel at Medvejie Hatchery snag and retain a total of three king salmon in an area posted closed to fishing and closed by regulation to snagging. When troopers attempted to contact the individuals on the Medvejie fish pens, the suspects failed to stop their vessel as directed. One of the suspects and boat operator was identified as Jonathan W. McGraw Jr., 36, of Sitka. McGraw was subsequently stopped on Sawmill Creek Road by Sitka police as he towed his boat from the water. Investigation revealed McGraw and Joshua L. Gradin, 22, of Burbank, Wash., had dumped the three dead king salmon in Silver Bay shortly after fleeing from troopers. Both suspects were charged with failing to release snagged king salmon and waste of salmon. Gradin was also charged with failing to record a nonresident king salmon landing. Charges of failure to stop at the direction of a peace office and violation of conditions of release are being forwarded to the district attorney on McGraw. Gradin's total bail was $370. McGraw's total bail was $410. Both suspects were summoned to Sitka court for arraignment, on the waste of fish charge.

Bristol Bay troopers say man 'recklessly' fired gun

The person named in this item is a Bristol Bay salmon drift gillnet permit holder.

On 7/5/10 Sergei I. Martushev, 24, of Homer, was cited by Bristol Bay Enforcement Troopers for misconduct involving a firearm. An investigation by troopers revealed Martushev was recklessly discharging a firearm in Bristol Bay. Arraignment is scheduled for 7/12/10 in Dillingham District Court.

Troopers: Gillnetter cut halibut longline at Sitka

Type: Criminal mischief
On 7/3/10 Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Haines served Brian A. O'Riley, 62, of Haines, a summons for criminal mischief. The charge results from an incident on 6/11/10 where O'Riley intentionally cut off a legal subsistence longline for halibut, just prior to a gillnet opening O'Riley was participating in, inside the Deep Inlet terminal harvest area. The longline was valued at approximately $150. The victim contacted O'Riley with the remnants of the longline still aboard his vessel, then reported the crime to Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post. O'Riley is set to appear on 7/13/10 in the Sitka court.

On 7/8/10 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, observed the F/V Patty Lynn operating a seine net in the Deep Inlet terminal harvest area after the area had closed to seining. Owner and permit holder James R. Vaughan, 47 of Craig, was summoned to Sitka District Court for commercial fishing during a closed period.

Troopers charge four on Yukon with illegal fishing

After patrolling commercial fisheries on the Lower Yukon River via state float plane, the Alaska Wildlife Troopers post in St. Marys cited the following: Alexie Benjamin, 47, and Louis Immamak, 35, both of Emmonak, for commercial fishing during a closed period; and Willie Long, 44, and John Long, 18, both of St. Marys, for commercial fishing in closed waters.
