Troller cited, salmon seized at Sitka

Location: Sitka
Type: Possess king, coho during closed period
On 8/11/23 Alaska Wildlife Troopers investigated a report of coho salmon being delivered from a troll vessel which had retained the fish during a closed period. Investigation revealed Jeffrey Odam, 54, of Oregon, had retained five coho salmon and one king salmon while participating in the commercial chum salmon fishery. Retention of king and coho salmon was closed by emergency order when the fish were retained. The fish were seized and Odam was issued a summons to appear in Sitka District Court.

Trident accused of multiple infractions

The Alaska State Troopers have charged Trident Seafoods Corp. with multiple counts of "unlawful possession of fish."

The charges stem from inspection of Trident tenders offloading seine-caught salmon in Ketchikan, troopers press releases say.

Trident was cited for three counts of unlawful possession of fish after an inspection on Aug. 13.

"Investigation revealed Trident Seafoods had retained 40 king salmon and one steelhead that were not reported on any commercial fish tickets as required," troopers said.

Trident was cited for another count of unlawful possession of fish after an inspection two days later.

"Investigation revealed Trident Seafoods had retained eight king salmon and two steelhead that were not reported on commercial fish tickets as required," troopers said.

A number of tendermen also were charged.

Californian fined for unlawful shellfish possession

Location: Prince of Wales Island
Type: Conviction
On 11/16/15 Alaska Wildlife Troopers based on the P/V Enforcer contacted Sidney McGuire, 27, of California, in Hetta Inlet near Prince of Wales Island. McGuire was onboard the commercial fishing vessel Sea Hunt and was participating in the commercial sea cucumber dive fishery. Investigation revealed McGuire was in unlawful possession of rock scallops while in possession of commercially harvested sea cucumbers. McGuire was issued a summons to appear in Craig District Court. A bench trial was held on 2/3/16 and McGuire was found guilty of the offense of unlawful possession of miscellaneous shellfish aboard a vessel. McGuire was sentenced to a fine of $400 with $200 suspended and one year of probation.

Juneau troopers cite Dungeness crabber

Location: Juneau
Type: Unlawful possession
On 1/25/16 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Juneau Post, issued Rudolf Ziel, 37, of Tenakee, a summons for possessing commercial Dungeness crab more than 24 hours past the fishery closure on 11/30/15. Arraignment set for 2/19/16 in Juneau District Court.

Troopers charge Metlatkatla gillnetter

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Ketchikan
Type: Multiple offenses
On 10/2/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers charged Timothy R. Staples, 36, of Metlatkatla, with commercial gillnetting in Alaska waters without a valid 2014 Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission permit; fishing during a closed season; and unlawfully possessing commercially taken fish. All three counts are misdemeanors. Arraignment scheduled in Ketchikan District Court.

Troopers cite longliner, seize halibut and gear

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Ketchikan
Type: No halibut permit, unlawful possession
On 6/25/11 at 0345 hours Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, cited William Hayward for commercial fishing halibut near Duke Island without a Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission interim use permit. Hayward also was cited for possessing halibut taken illegally by commercial longline gear without a permit. Approximately 100 pounds of halibut and three skates of longline gear were seized. A mandatory court appearance was set for 7/11/11 in Ketchikan District Court.

Juneau men cited on multiple Dungeness counts

Location: Juneau
Type: Permit holder not present, unlawful possession of shellfish,
unsworn falsification, forgery and fish ticket violations
On 4/13/11 James R. Jensen, 57, Ole Nordgren, 43, Samuel D. Olson, 48, and Albert M. Mazon, 21, all of Juneau, were cited for multiple commercial fishing violations related to the summer 2010 commercial Dungeness crab fishery. All four men were issued summonses to appear on 4/26/11 in the Juneau District Court. The charges are a result of an investigation conducted by wildlife troopers in Juneau and Petersburg. The fishing vessel Fly-by-Night was previously seized by troopers in October of 2010 and is being held pending the outcome of the case.
