DUI, Dec. 9 — An officer contacted a driver who had veered off the road before abruptly turning across the roadway and parking near a defunct processing plant. Driver Nicholas Meriwether Dryden, 32, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

Fire response, Dec. 19 — Caller reported hearing an explosion near Magone Marine and then seeing a skiff on fire in that area. Fire personnel who responded to the area found a large controlled burn in a ship's hull, which was being used as a fire pit.

Assistance rendered, Dec. 19 — School bus driver reported being stuck on ice on Captains Bay Road. Officers provided traffic control while personnel from Westward Seafoods used their equipment to move the bus.

Ambulance request, Dec. 19 — EMS personnel provided care and transport for a young man who had accidentally stabbed himself in the leg with a new Victorinox knife which was protruding from his backpack.

Assault, Dec. 21 — A man voiding his bladder in public threatened another man who had the impertinence to order him to cease micturating. The unruly urinator was advised he could be barred from company premises if he continued to create problems.

Suspicious activity, Dec. 21, 1801 hours — Crewmembers reported their captain had not been seen since approximately midnight, when he had been drinking at a bar. The crew, who were drinking at another bar, did not appear overly concerned about this state of affairs. A short time later the captain was reported to be back.

Assault, Dec. 22 — Officers responded to a melee outside the airport and found about a dozen alcohol- and testosterone-fueled fishermen milling about the bathroom. The men, only one of whom was injured, could not individually provide any coherent story but collectively related a tale of fishermen gone bad, quite possibly as a result of overconsumption of alcohol.

Noise disturbance, Dec. 24 — A bunkhouse tenant who was decidedly lacking in holiday cheer called police to complain about a neighbor who was cooking, albeit quietly, a late dinner in the communal kitchen. An officer suggested that the complainant simply be nice to his neighbor.

Suspicious activity, Dec. 24 — Caller reported men in a bucket truck were doing something to equipment on the Standard Oil Hill tsunami siren. The responding officer found two city employees repairing tower-mounted communication equipment.

Drunk disturbance, Dec. 26 — A dipsomaniac who had been fired from his previous employment made his way to a different vessel at a different dock, where he was again told by vessel management and police officers to leave.

Seiner pleads guilty at Sitka, nets $1,500 fine

On 9/4/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Nyle D. Thomas, 31, of Petersburg, after observing the F/V Barbara set a seine net prior to the 0600 opening of the Deep Inlet fishery. On 12/2/14 Thomas pled guilty in Sitka District Court to one count of commercial fishing in a closed period. He was fined $3,000 with $1,500 suspended and placed on probation for one year. The fish caught in the illegal set were released alive at the time of the violation.

From the local police blotter:

Domestic disturbance, Nov. 16 — Caller requested officer assistance in removing his girlfriend from his residence. Caller was upset because his girlfriend wouldn't sleep with him but was sleeping with everybody else. Officers advised that the two separate for the evening to avoid further issues.

Welfare check, Nov. 17 — Boat captain requested assistance with a crewmember who went "crazy" aboard the vessel a few days earlier. Captain wanted the individual checked out by mental health when the vessel arrived in town. Officers contacted the individual in question who stated he did not go crazy, but just lost his cool due to the poor conditions on the vessel.

Theft, Nov. 19 — Caller reported approximately $25,000 worth of stolen fishing gear from their vessel. Suspect was identified. Complainant just wanted the property returned and did not want to press charges.

Noise disturbance, Nov. 19 — Caller reported that his neighbor was playing loud, Satan-like music and he wanted it to stop. Officers contacted the group and advised them to turn down the music.

Assistance rendered, Nov. 20 — Officers assisted the Harbor Department with the seizure of a vessel.

Trespass, Nov. 20 — Boat captain requested assistance in removing an intoxicated and aggressive individual from his vessel. Officers advised the subject he was trespassed indefinitely from the vessel upon the captain's request.

Drug violation, Nov. 21 — Officer was notified of possible drug activity by a local fisherman. Individual in question had flown off the island.

Roads, Dec. 1 — Caller reported a fishing buoy rolling around in the roadway on the South Channel Bridge. A city sanitation specialist removed it.

Ketchikan man charged with illegal shrimping

From the Alaska State Troopers:

On 12/08/14 Donald E. Westlund, 63, of Ketchikan, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, for commercial shrimping during a closed season and unlawful storage of gear. Westlund was cited after 15 of his commercial shrimp pots were located in fishing condition. Arraignment set for 12/17/14 in Ketchikan District Court.

Bait seller cited at Dutch Harbor

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Type: No catcher-seller permit
On 12/4/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers issued a citation to Reynaldo Bada Sidro, 42, of Anchorage, for selling Pacific cod as bait to a commercial fishing vessel without possessing a catcher-seller permit. Arraignment set for 12/16/14 in Unalaska District Court.

Assistance rendered, Nov. 5 — Out-of-state caller phoned 10 or so times to make sure that her mother-in-law was safe from a large storm that was still days away from making landfall. An officer suggested she contact some of her other family members to see what precautions had been put in place.

Assault, Nov. 8 — Several men beat and strangled a lone man outside the Harbor View bar, rendering him unconscious for several minutes and leaving him with severe injuries about the chest and head. The thugs attempted to flee with the victim's jacket but were followed and briefly detained by UniSea security. Officers responding to the scene quickly identified two of the three men as Brandon M. Ahrndt, 27, and Christopher T. Israelson, 23. The third man was later identified as Keith Hilty, 29. Ahrndt, Israelson and Hilty were arrested on charges of robbery, assault and theft.

Welfare check, Nov. 8 — Daughter requested assistance locating and contacting her mother, who apparently had boarded a flight to Unalaska to meet a man named John about a job in a newly opened cafe. Investigating officers were able to locate neither a newly opened cafe nor a man named John associated with any new or old cafes or similar establishments. Several hours later the daughter called to report that she had made contact with her mother.

DUI, Nov. 12 — Local boat captain reported that one of his deckhands had just been terminated due to his level of intoxication. Caller believed that the deckhand was possibly about to drive. Police sergeant contacted the intoxicated individual inside the described vehicle sleeping. There was no evidence that the vehicle had been driven.

Animal, Nov. 12 — Harbor officer observed a dead eagle on Ballyhoo Road near City Dock. Local truck driver reported that three eagles swooped in front of his vehicle and he accidentally ran over the young one. The Alaska State Troopers collected the eagle remains.

Assault, Nov. 13 — Boat captain reported being attacked by a drunken deckhand aboard the vessel. Officers responded and arrested Malaefou Laulu, 38, for assault.

Assistance rendered, Nov. 15 — Local resident got upset when he found a naked man inside his mom's room. He yelled at the naked man and told him to leave the house. The mother soon returned and asked that her son be made to leave the residence for the evening. Officers advised that they could not force the son to leave the residence as he lived there and no crime had been committed.

Silver Bay Seafoods cited over late fish tickets

On 11/12/14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, cited Silver Bay Seafoods for 13 counts of failure to submit commercial fish tickets on time to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. A mandatory court date was set for Craig District Court.
