Gustavus gillnetter wins one, loses one at trial

On 9/27/12 Winfield Jedediah Bickford-Harding, 36, of Gustavus, was found guilty on one count of operating a commercial gillnet during a closed period in 2011 in District 11B. He was found not guilty on a second count of operating a commercial gillnet during a closed period in District 15C. On the conviction, Bickford-Harding was fined $3,000 with $1,500 suspended and ordered to forfeit $863 worth of illegally taken fish. He also was placed on probation for 18 months.

Sitka troller accused of illegal Chinook possession

On 9/21/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, contacted Kenneth DesRosiers, 53, of Sitka, regarding a report of illegal possession of king salmon. Investigation revealed DesRosiers possessed commercial troll-caught king salmon onboard his vessel after the king salmon closure and while trolling for other salmon species. DesRosiers was cited with an arraignment set in Sitka District Court.

On 9/25/12 the Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Soldotna charged Steven W. Beling, 45, of Seldovia, with commercial fishing with a drift gillnet in closed waters in Upper Cook Inlet. He was issued a summons to appear on 10/23/12 in Homer District Court.

Dutch Harbor report

From the local police blotter:

Suspicious activity, Sept. 16 — A driver left his vehicle parked in the middle of the roadway while he investigated the interior of a salmonberry thicket. The driver told an officer that other people had left their vehicles in the same location, so he assumed parking in the roadway was acceptable.

Theft, Sept. 20 — Officer responded to a processing plant where rival groups of men were threatening to fight one another over the alleged theft of a cell phone. The men were advised of the various charges they all faced if such action continued.

Disorderly conduct, Sept. 20 — An intoxicated man with a $337 bar tab refused to pay his bill and instead returned to his hotel room and passed out. After officers arrived he attempted to pay with an $8,000 check, which could not be accepted. The inebriate was allowed to stay the night, to be evicted in the morning.

Liquor law violation, Sept. 22 — Acting on a tip from another patron, an officer checked the Harbor View bar bathroom and found a pair of blue Converse shoes and associated body parts sticking out of a bathroom stall. The drunk to which the shoes were attached eventually stumbled out of the stall and was advised he was not allowed to remain on the premises.

Welfare check, Sept. 22, 0552 hours — Officers checked on a man running back and forth across the roadway and found a mildly intoxicated young man who said he was enjoying the wet and windy weather and was walking to his brother's vessel.

On 9/21/12 the Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Soldotna charged Rueben C. Demidoff, 52, of Sterling, with commercial fishing with a drift gillnet in closed waters in Upper Cook Inlet. He was issued a summons to appear on 10/19/12 in Kenai District Court.

Southeast crabber convicted, forfeits $88K catch

Type: Conviction — crabbing violations
On 9/18/12 Jay Thomassen, the permit holder on the F/V Angelette, was convicted of two misdemeanor counts. The charges were the result of an Alaska Wildlife Troopers investigation that showed Thomassen committed several commercial fishing violations during the 2012 golden king crab season. Thomassen pled guilty to one count of fishing in closed waters and one count of retaining undersized golden king crab. He was ordered to pay $6,000 and forfeit his catch valued at $88,222.20 to the state of Alaska.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Soldotna charged William M. Wade, 56, of Bow, Wash., with commercial fishing with a drift gillnet in closed waters in Upper Cook Inlet. He was issued a summons to appear on 10/5/12 in Kenai District Court.

Two teens arrested in vandalism of Icicle cannery

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Larsen Bay, Kodiak Island
Type: Burglary, criminal mischief
On 9/14/12 at approximately 1042 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report that the Icicle Seafoods cannery in Larsen Bay had been broken into and vandalized. Investigation revealed a warehouse belonging to Icicle had been broken into sometime between 2200 hours on 9/13/12 and 0800 hours on 9/14/12. A forklift inside the warehouse was driven through a wall of the warehouse breaching the outside wall. A pallet with packing for processing was also damaged. Icicle Seafoods estimated the damages at approximately $20,000. The investigation resulted in the arrest of Pete Muller, 19, and Derick Hochmuth, 19, both of Larsen Bay. Muller and Hochmuth were lodged into the Kodiak jail to await arraignment.

Assistance rendered, Sept. 4, 0418 hours — Woman reported having been kicked out of her boyfriend's parents' home after the boyfriend's mother caught the two of them naked in bed.

Animal, Sept. 4 — Caller reported having been treated at the clinic for two puncture wounds on her head, compliments of a local bald eagle.

Protective custody, Sept. 4 — Officers took into custody a severely disturbed man who believed he was already dead and in heaven.

Assistance rendered, Sept. 5 — Officer spoke with a company manager who had received word that three of his employees would be arrested upon their return to port, due to their failure to complete certain work as assigned. An officer assured the company rep that this was a civil matter and no arrests would be made.

Public safety, Sept. 5 — UniSea employee reported poor driving on the parts of many drivers who had been diverted, due to road construction, through the pedestrian-laden UniSea processing area.

Ambulance request, Sept. 7 — EMS personnel provided care and assistance to a man whose head had been struck by a falling case of frozen fish.

From the local police blotter:

Criminal mischief, Aug. 28 — Business owner reported one of her houseplants, left in an Intersea Mall hallway, had been knifed repeatedly by an unidentified assailant.

Welfare check, Aug. 28 — Desperate girlfriend asked police to check on her boyfriend, who was supposed to call this morning and had not yet done so. Vessel personnel helped officers locate the man, who was sleeping soundly in his bunk, and deliver the message to phone his gal.

Suspicious activity, Aug. 28 — Officers investigated a months-old incident in which a mother's boyfriend was accused of kissing the mother's daughter while she was sleeping. All parties reported the man accidentally kissed the daughter while standing on a table to put away a pillow.

Suspicious activity, Aug. 30, 0204 hours — Officers responded to a bunkhouse regarding an alleged fight in progress and found several grown men irritating another by continually turning off the electricity to the single man's room. The men were advised to resolve their differences and keep their noise to a minimum.

Suspicious activity, Sept. 1 — Complainant reported a swastika had been spray-painted on the sidewalk near the Public Works facility. A road construction superintendent said he would see that the symbol was removed.

Assistance rendered, Sept. 1 — A man reported he had been slapped and hit in the right eye after asking a woman if she was pregnant. The man was not injured and did not wish to press charges.

Assault, Sept. 1 — Joshua L. Ellis, 26, of Washington, was arrested on one count of disorderly conduct, two counts violating conditions of release and one count of false information to a peace officer after he was chased down and dragged from the car under which he was hiding. Ellis had hid under the car after repeatedly walloping an unidentified victim in front of the Harbor View bar. The victim and most witnesses fled while Ellis was being detained.

On 8/30/12 two crewmen of a Kodiak-based fishing vessel reported one was assaulted by a third crewman on 8/28/12 in the vicinity of Tombstone Rocks. The investigation continues.
