Three cited at Dutch Harbor over female opilio

Type: Possess female opilio crab
On 5/29/12 Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers issued a summons to Gordon Eric Kristjanson, 55, of Woodinville, Wash., for possessing female opilio crab onboard his commercial fishing vessel. Arraignment is scheduled for 7/18/12 in Unalaska District Court.

On 5/29/12 David Martin, 44, of Homer, was cited by Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers for possession of female opilio crab onboard the F/V Kona Kai. The female opilio crab totaled 2 percent of the random sample conducted at the time of offload. Martin was given an arraignment date of 7/18/12 in Unalaska District Court.

On 5/29/12 Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers issued a summons to Moore William Dye, 46, of Battle Ground, Wash., for possessing female opilio crab onboard his commercial fishing vessel. Arraignment is scheduled for 7/18/12 in Unalaska District Court.

Sitka lodge owners accused of lying on license applications; Ohaus heads charter organization

Type: False statement on sportfishing license
On 5/25/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, cited Thomas C. Ohaus, 59, of South Dartmouth, Mass., for multiple violations related to claiming residency on sportfishing licenses. Investigation revealed Ohaus, a sportfish guide and co-owner of a sportfishing lodge, falsely obtained Alaska resident licenses since at least 2007 while residing in Massachusetts. Ohaus is charged with five counts of knowingly making a false statement on an application for a sportfish license. Arraignment is set in Sitka District Court.

On 5/25/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, cited Charles A. McNamee, 36, of Nevis, Minn., for multiple violations related to claiming residency on sportfishing licenses. Investigation revealed McNamee, a sportfish guide and co-owner of a sportfishing lodge, falsely obtained Alaska resident licenses since at least 2007 while residing in Minnesota. McNamee is charged with five counts of knowingly making a false statement on an application for a sportfish license. Arraignment is set in Sitka District Court.

Ohaus and McNamee are co-owners of Angling Unlimited, a Sitka lodge that runs halibut and salmon sportfishing charters. Ohaus is president of SEAGO, a nonprofit organization representing the Southeast Alaska charter industry. The two men have an arraignment date of June 26.

Public safety, May 21 — An inmate who had so far failed to make bail on earlier charges faked a seizure and manhandled a corrections officer in order to flee his cell, but his attempt to escape from the jail was stymied when the secret code he claimed had been written on his jail-issued slippers did not open the door to the great outdoors. Alas, Christopher J. Hadsell, 23, of Washington, remained in jail with an additional charge of attempted escape.

Criminal mischief, May 21 — Boat captain reported his vessel had been broken into and vandalized during his absence. Based on documents and distinctive messages left at the scene, a suspect was quickly identified. Under investigation.

Environmental, May 23 — A sheen of diesel fuel was found on the water near the small-boat harbor. Alaska State Troopers and the Coast Guard were notified.

Public safety, May 24 — An inmate whose first escape attempt was foiled endeavored yet again to flee the confines of custody, this time by attempting to dart away from officers outside the courthouse. Christopher J. Hadsell's virtuoso performance ended about eight inches after it started, when his leg shackles and the two officers on either side of him prevented him from going any further. Hadsell was charged with a second count of attempted escape.

Troopers bust four more Copper River fishermen

On 5/26/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Brent Davis, 43, of Cordova, for commercial fishing during a closed period. The F/V Gizella was observed fishing during a closed period on 5/21/12 by state aircraft. Arraignment set for 6/27/12 in Cordova District Court.

On 5/24/12 airborne Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet during a closed period. Investigation revealed that the vessel was the F/V Miss Dana, operated by Robert L. Nelson, 49, of Soldotna. Nelson was summoned to appear for arraignment on 6/27/12 in Cordova District Court.

On 5/24/12 airborne Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet during a closed period. Investigation revealed that the vessel was the F/V Inspiration, operated by Gerald J. McCune, 36, of Cordova. McCune was summoned to appear for arraignment on 6/27/12 in Cordova District Court.

Investigation revealed that the vessel was the F/V Salavey, operated by Kiril Kuzmin, 32, of Oklee, Minn. Kuzmin was summoned to appear for arraignment on 6/27/12 in Cordova District Court.

Two charged with illegal fishing at Copper River

On 5/24/12 airborne Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, observed a vessel operating a drift gillnet during a closed period. The investigation revealed the vessel to be the Remora operated by Pete D. Hoepfner of Cordova. Subsequently he was issued a summons with an arraignment date of 6/13/12 in Cordova District Court.

The investigation revealed the vessel to be the Shiloh operated by William A. Bailey III of Cordova. Assault, May 13, 0041 hours — Victor T. Tamasoaalii, 54, of Oregon, was arrested for assault after he stormed into the Harbor View bar kitchen, grabbed some culinary knives and threatened the cook for having failed to fulfill his food order.

Assault, May 13 — Vessel captain reported an assault had occurred while the vessel was on the fishing grounds. The victim, who had been punched in the face after correcting a subordinate's performance, chose not to pursue charges.

Trespass, May 13 — Officer issued a trespass advisement, per FCA management, to a man no longer welcome on FCA ships or property.

Drunk disturbance, May 15, 1706 hours — Caller reported a beer-toting inebriate dropping the f-bomb all over the airport terminal. The inebriate told an officer he would start using his very best behavior since his attitude and intoxication had already caught the attention of those responsible for allowing departing passengers to board their flight, and he sincerely desired to be reunited with his family this night.

Roads, May 16 — Unalaska Department of Public Safety received a roadwork permit from UniSea, for upcoming road renovations near the UniSea facility.

Welfare check, May 16 — A heartbroken teen shared his angst with his ex, an act which resulted in a call to police out of fear the youth might act on his expressed desire to kill himself, his ex and her new boyfriend. Officers determined the youth's manifesto was simply melodramatic rather than murderous.

Assistance rendered, May 18 — Graduating seniors drastically reduced the amount of available parking by parking across rather than in designated parking spaces, triggering a call to police for assistance. The school principal chuckled at the prank and said police intervention was unnecessary.

Assistance rendered, May 19, 0310 hours — A drunken sailor was found wandering about on a dock, and was turned over to a sober crewmate onboard his vessel.

Ariz. man lands trouble with sport-caught halibut

Type: Possess sport-caught halibut aboard commercial vessel
On 5/17/12 at approximately 1345 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Cordova Post, contacted Scott Allen, 25, of Prescott, Ariz., aboard the F/V Polar Star. Investigation revealed that Allen had landed a halibut while sportfishing at a time when commercially caught king salmon were aboard the vessel. Allen was summoned to appear on 6/27/12 in Cordova District Court.

Tanner crabber nets $1,500 fine, forfeits gear

Type: Conviction
On 5/18/12 Ben Gross, 38, of Wasilla, pled guilty to a charge of retaining commercial undersized Tanner crab. Gross was fined $6,000 with $4,500 suspended. He also forfeited seized gear and was placed on probation for two years.

Togiak herring spotter planes burglarized

Location: Togiak
Type: Theft, criminal mischief
On 5/15/12 at 0600 hours, the Alaska State Troopers in Dillingham received a report in Togiak that several aircraft had been damaged and items taken from inside the aircraft. The aircraft are privately owned and are working as contracted fliers during the herring fishery. Investigation revealed that four Super Cub-type airplanes were parked at the Togiak airport and had windows damaged in an estimated amount of $1,000. Two firearms, a fuel jug and survival gear were taken from the aircraft in an estimated amount of $4,000. During the investigation, all of the stolen items were recovered except for a firearm. The investigation is still ongoing.

Assault, May 6 — A man who apparently found it difficult to follow directions returned to the Harbor View bar after having been advised he would be arrested if he did so, and proceeded to punch one of the doormen, breaking his glasses and injuring his face. Christopher J. Hadsell, 23, of Washington, was arrested for assault, criminal mischief and criminal trespass.

Assistance rendered, May 6 — Officers mediated a dispute between two men on a fishing vessel, one of whom claimed to have paid for the privilege of staying on the vessel and the other of whom stated he no longer wanted the first man onboard.

Suspicious activity, May 7 — Beachcomber found a section of spinal column. Officers contacted a local marine biologist who was able to identify the bones as belonging to a sea lion.

Public safety, May 9 — The season's first victim was attacked by a bald eagle across from the Iliuliuk Family & Health Services clinic. No injuries were reported.

Lost property, May 9 — A wallet, with various cards and a small quantity of cash, at either the Harbor View bar or Alyeska Seafoods.

Animal, May 10 — Caller reported a dog barking, and predicted that other dogs would soon join the canine chorus.

Welfare check, May 11, 0113 hours — A woman asked officers to check on her sister, who was allegedly suicidal after having misplaced approximately $12,000 in cash. Officers found the sister asleep in her bed. The intoxicated sister assured officers she would not harm herself unless she failed to find her money, in which event she might change her mind.

Trespass, May 11 — Officer issued a trespass advisement, per UniSea security, to a man who had recently assaulted a UniSea employee.

Troller cited on false residency claims

Type: False statements
On 4/23/12 Daniel Brigham, 61, a resident of Rebersburg, Pa., was cited by Hoonah Wildlife Troopers for unlawfully obtaining resident sportfish licenses from 2007-10, and commercial power troll permits from 2008-11. Brigham had claimed to live on his commercial fishing boat, the Camijo, in Sitka from 2007-11. Subsequent investigation revealed that he has only spent a few summer months in Alaska each year before returning to his house and hatchery business in Pennsylvania.

Ketchikan man hit with slew of geoduck violations

Location: Ketchikan
Type: Falsify fish tickets, unlawful possession
On 5/8/12 Le Jiayong, 57, of Ketchikan, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Ketchikan Post, on 19 counts for falsifying commercial fish tickets and unlawful possession of commercially taken geoduck clams. Le was cited after investigation revealed he had purchased commercially taken geoducks from four fishermen and provided false weights on Alaska Department of Fish and Game fish tickets. Investigation by Ketchikan and Klawock State Troopers found that Le misreported the actual weights of commercially taken geoduck clams and failed to report geoduck clams that had been harvested in excess of trip limits established by Fish and Game. Arraignment is scheduled in Ketchikan District Court.

Missing person, April 29 — Wife reported her husband, employed on a fishing vessel here, had not returned home as scheduled. Officers determined the man flew out of town two days earlier, and provided that information to the wife.

Suspicious person/activity, May 2 — Caller reported finding a spine while beachcombing. The description of the spine made it seem unlikely that it was of human origin.

Drunk disturbance, May 3 — Caller reported an intoxicated individual causing a ruckus in the common area of a bunkhouse. Officers confirmed the presence of said sot who agreed to scram.

Theft, May 5 — Owner of a local business reported that an individual had asked to see a $70 necklace from a display case. The patron grabbed the necklace and attempted to flee the store. The Darwin Award nominee was unable to operate the front door which he pushed when it required that he pull. The clodpoll returned the necklace and apologized. The business owner declined to pursue charges.

Crewman charged in assault aboard factory boat

On 5/5/12 Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers issued a summons to Jonathan Anthony Jimerson, 20, of Seattle, for assaulting a coworker in the factory processing area, while at sea, onboard a commercial catcher-processor vessel. Arraignment set for 6/6/12 in Unalaska District Court.

Petersburg king crabber accused of illegal fishing

On 5/2/12 Jeremy Jensen, 37, of Petersburg, was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers for fishing in closed waters for golden king crab. Jensen is the permit holder on the F/V Harvester. Arraignment set for 6/6/12 in Petersburg District Court.

Dutch Harbor report

From the local police blotter:

Theft, April 22 — A thief who left his old shoes in an apparent trade for a new pair was found waiting for a flight at the airport. Carlos A. Valenzuela, 37, was cited for theft and his new, and only, pair of shoes was seized.

Criminal mischief, April 23, 1014 hours — Multiple calls were received regarding graffiti which had been spray-painted on both the Russian Orthodox Church and the bishop’s manse. Several suspects, all young, were identified. Under investigation.

Criminal mischief, April 23, 1107 hours — Additional graffiti was found painted on several businesses and on construction materials around Dutch Harbor. The graffiti appears to be the work of the same individuals responsible for the vandalism at the Russian Orthodox Church. Under investigation.

Roads, April 23 — A rockslide covered part of Airport Beach Road. The boulders were quickly removed from the roadway by an able-bodied officer.

Roads, April 24 — Caller reported a rockslide on Airport Beach Road. Mighty fire and police officers removed the rocks from the roadway.

Drunk disturbance, April 24 — Officers spoke with a drunken, disruptive fisherman, who conveniently lay down on the deck with his hands behind his back upon officers’ arrival, and convinced him it was in his best interests to simply go to his room rather than continue disturbing his fellow crewmates.

Roads, April 25 — Another caller reported a rockslide on Airport Beach Road, with rocks that were 8 inches high. A sturdy police officer removed the enormous boulders from the roadway.
