Troopers cite another crabber at Petersburg

Location: Petersburg
Type: Retain undersized Tanner crab
On 2/25/12 Ben Gross, 38, of Wasilla, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Wrangell Post, for retaining undersized commercial Tanner crab. Gross was the permit holder of the F/V Martina, and was contacted while offloading his catch in Petersburg. Arraignment set for 4/4/12 in Petersburg District Court.

Dutch Harbor report

From the local police blotter:

Protective custody, Feb. 22 — An extremely intoxicated man was found comatose in the Magone Marine galley, and was subsequently dragged into Title 47 protective custody.

Assistance rendered, Feb. 24 — Officers responded to the airport regarding a report of a drunken man causing numerous problems in the terminal. Investigation revealed that a single besotted man had roundly cursed airline employees and attempted to pick fights with no less than five people. His last victim, who told officers he was performing a community service, smacked the drunk on the head and then stood over him and told him not to be so rude. None of the victims wished to pursue charges, as they all felt justice had already been served.

Welfare check, Feb. 25, 2323 hours — Vessel captain rescued an inebriate who had fallen into the water near the Spit Dock. Both men were out of the water quickly and did not need medical assistance.

Another case of undersized crab at Petersburg

Type: Undersized commercial Tanner crab
On 2/24/12 Marc Martinsen, 51, of Petersburg, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Wrangell Post, for retaining undersized Tanner crab. Martinsen was the permit holder of the F/V Jade Ann, and was contacted while offloading his catch in Petersburg. Arraignment set for 3/21/12 in Petersburg District Court.

Troopers cite three Cook Inlet fishermen

Type: Failure to register for commercial fishery
On 2/18/12 Wildlife Troopers cited Nikolai Reutov, 43, of Homer, for failing to register for the 2012 groundfish fishery prior to participating in the fishery for the Cook Inlet area. Reutov had operated the F/V Pioneer in Cook Inlet waters without notifying the Alaska Department of Fish and Game prior to fishing. Reutov was issued a summons to appear on 3/20/12 in Seward District Court.

On 2/18/12 Wildlife Troopers cited Anatoly Reutov, 32, of Sterling, for failing to register for the 2012 groundfish fishery prior to participating in the fishery for the Cook Inlet area. Reutov had operated the F/V Last One in Cook Inlet waters without notifying the Alaska Department of Fish and Game prior to fishing. Reutov was issued a summons to appear on 3/20/12 in Seward District Court.

On 2/18/12 Wildlife Troopers cited Safron Kalugin, 25, of Homer, for failing to register for the 2012 groundfish fishery prior to participating in the fishery for the Cook Inlet area. Kalugin had operated the F/V Runaway in Cook Inlet waters without notifying the Alaska Department of Fish and Game prior to fishing. Kalugin was issued a summons to appear on 3/20/12 in Seward District Court.

Undersized crab result in citation at Petersburg

Type: Undersized commercial Tanner crab
On 2/19/12 Wayne Easterly, 32, of Wrangell, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Petersburg Post, for retaining undersized Tanner crab. Easterly, the permit holder of the F/V Limit, was contacted while offloading his catch in Petersburg. Arraignment set for 3/14/12 in Petersburg District Court.

Another charter guide cited over logbook

Location: Valdez
Type: Sportfish guide logbook violation
On 2/16/12 Jerry Lee, 45, of Anchorage, was cited by the Valdez Wildlife Trooper for failing to return sportfish charter logbook information in the time and manner specified in the logbook. Bail was set at $630 in Valdez District Court.

Welfare check, Feb. 12 — An officer responding to a report of an inebriate passed out in the airport found an exhausted but not intoxicated man who said he had been working very long hours for the past two weeks. A friend arrived to take the tuckered fellow back to his vessel for the night.

Ambulance request, Feb. 14 — EMS volunteers provided care for individual who had four fingers amputated while out fishing.

Ambulance request, Feb. 15 — EMS volunteers provided medical care to an individual who had received steam burns while offloading a container ship.

Drug law violation, Feb. 15 — Information regarding crack cocaine distribution in Unalaska received.

Ambulance request, Feb. 16 — EMS volunteers transported patient from docking vessel to clinic.

Drug law violation, Feb. 16 — Local seafood processing plant
reported that an employee is receiving suspicious packages in the mail. Officers discovered illicit substances inside one of these packages. Currently under investigation.

Ambulance request, Feb. 17, 0209 hours — EMS volunteers responded to a heavily sedated patient who had been acting in a bizarre manner while on a processing vessel.

Assistance rendered, Feb. 17, 0217 hours — Officers assisted with possibly combative patient.

Animal, Feb. 17 — Cat turned over to public safety for adoption. Immediately adopted by individual who had wanted a cat for weeks.

Traffic, Feb. 18 — Rotund rock reported relaxing in road.

Domestic disturbance, Feb. 18 — Raging roommate attempted roundhouse punch. Abdirahman A. Warasme, 43, of Tukwila, Wash., was charged with assault. He claimed his roommates were just too religious and angry at him for being drunk.

Ambulance request, Feb. 18 — EMS volunteers responded to individual who had fallen from the top bunk.

Troopers cite Petersburg charter operator

Type: Sportfish charter logbook violation
On 2/6/12 Donn Hayes, of Benicia, Calif., owner and operator of Petersburg Sportfishing, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers. Hayes had failed to submit the required logbook information for his charter business in the time set forth in regulation. Hayes was issued three citations with a combined bail of $630, or an optional appearance in Petersburg District Court.

Whittier charter operator ticketed over logbook

On 2/15/12 Huey Mason II, 51, of Anchorage, was cited by the Valdez Wildlife Trooper. Mason, as the owner-operator of Alaskan 4 Star Charters, out of Whittier, was issued citations for failing to return sportfish charter logbook information in the time and manner specified in the logbook. Bail was set at $1,050 in Valdez District Court.

Juneau court strips crabber of fishing privileges

Location: Juneau
Type: Conviction — commercial fish without permit
On 2/2/12 James R. Jensen, 58, of Juneau, pled guilty in Juneau District Court to one count of operating commercial Dungeness crab gear without a valid Commercial Fisheries Entry Commission permit. Jensen was sentenced to the loss of his commercial fishing privileges for two years. As part of the plea agreement with the state, additional charges of unlawful possession of shellfish, unsworn falsification and forgery were dismissed. Jensen also was ordered to serve 180 days in jail with all 180 days suspended, and placed on probation for five years. The case was the result of an investigation conducted by wildlife troopers in Juneau and Petersburg.

Ambulance request, Feb. 5 — EMS personnel provided care and transport for two patients on a fishing vessel.

Suspicious person, Feb. 5 — Woman reported receiving an odd call on her business line from a mumbling man who identified himself as Frankenstein and made about as much sense as same.

Sexual offense, Feb. 7 — Officer was asked to document a sexual harassment incident at a local processing plant.

Ambulance request, Feb. 7, 2044 hours — EMS personnel prepared to accept a patient being brought in from Akutan by helicopter; the patient's arrival was delayed because weather conditions curtailed the helicopter's ability to land in Akutan.

Public safety, Feb. 7, 2122 hours — Advisory message regarding an impending blizzard.

Liquor law violation, Feb. 8, 0316 hours — Officers responded to a hotel room that had been rented by a 16-year-old girl after security reported screaming emanating from the room. A 29-year-old man was found in the room with the girl, who was inebriated and claimed the man had provided her with the alcohol. Andrew R. Philemonof Jr., of Anchorage, was arrested for furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Ambulance request, Feb. 8, 0326 hours — EMS personnel provided care and transport to a patient arriving from Akutan via vessel.

Assistance rendered, Feb. 8 — Officer presence was requested while a man was terminated from his place of employment, due to concerns about the number of firearms in the employee's possession and his likely response to the loss of his job.

Fire response, Feb. 8 — Fire personnel responded to a report of a vessel fire. Further investigation indicated the significant smoke from the vessel was due to a blown gasket.

Ambulance request, Feb. 10, 2115 hours — EMS personnel provided care and transport for a woman with an injured elbow.

Ambulance request, Feb. 10, 2210 hours — EMS personnel provided care and transport for a man who'd been hit in the head with an elbow.

Lodge owners cited on false residency claims

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Sitka
Type: False statement on sportfishing license
On 1/28/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post, issued citations to Phillip and Gwen Younger, both 52, of Scottsdale, Ariz., owners of a local fishing lodge, for making false statements on applications for resident sportfishing licenses in Sitka. Investigation revealed that both individuals had obtained multiple sportfishing licenses while never qualifying as an Alaska resident and by making a false statement. Phillip Younger was cited with three counts of making a false statement with bail set at $930. Gwen Younger was cited with one count of making a false statement with bail set at $310.

Troopers ticket sportfish guide over logbook

Type: Sportfish guide logbook violation
On 2/5/12 Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Cordova Post contacted Andrew Mezirow, 47, of Seward. Investigation revealed that Mezirow had not submitted a sportfish logbook page during the 2011 season in the manner and timeframe specified in the logbook. Bail is set at $210 in Seward District Court.

Ambulance request, Jan. 30 — EMS personnel responded to assist a person in need of medical attention from a passing ship.

Public safety, Feb. 1 — A man who was peeved about the amount of snow pushed against his home by road crews vented his frustration by rolling large snow boulders into the roadway. An officer advised against this course of action and helped the perturbed citizen remove said boulders from the road.

Assault, Feb. 2 — Processing plant employee reported being in fear for his life after being pushed in the chest and receiving a mean look from a coworker. Officers learned that language barriers and unfamiliarity with plant equipment had prompted the alleged altercation.

Ambulance request, Feb. 3 — EMS personnel provided care and transport to a man whose legs had been crushed by a 1,600-pound pallet.

Animal, Feb. 4 — A dog, which had made itself at home in a processing plant galley, was impounded and lodged in far less tasty digs.

Juneau dive fisherman nets $500 fine

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Juneau
Type: Conviction — unlawful use of dive gear
On 2/1/12 Todd W. Hadfield, 34, of Juneau, pled no contest in Juneau District Court to one count of unlawful use of commercial dive fishing gear. Hadfield was fined $1,000 with $500 suspended and placed on probation for two years. Initial investigation showed Hadfield, as the permit holder, allowed a crewmember to dive on the fishing grounds using scuba gear prior to the opening of a commercial sea cucumber dive fishery.

Petersburg man fined for crew license violation

From the Alaska State Troopers:

Location: Petersburg
Type: Conviction — falsify crew license
On 1/23/12 Shane Lohr, of Petersburg, pled guilty in Petersburg District Court to falsely obtaining a commercial crewmember license. An Alaska Wildlife Trooper investigation showed Lohr had purchased a resident crewmember license while he was receiving benefits as a resident in Wisconsin. Lohr's sentence included a $1,000 fine and loss of his crewmember license for two years.
