Fisherman reports death threat at Chignik

On 6/27/10 at 1015 hours, Kevin Griffen, 30, of Sitka, reported he was verbally assaulted and his life was threatened while commercial fishing in Chignik Lagoon. The Alaska State Troopers in King Salmon are investigating the report.

Unlicensed Bristol Bay crewman nets $250 ticket

Tendermen ticketed over lack of crew license

On 6/21/10 at approximately 1750 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers boarded the tender vessel Pacific Horizon north of Benjamin Island in Lynn Canal. The vessel was tendering salmon for the gillnet fishery. During the contact Nicholas McQuaid, 30, of Washington, was cited for not having a crewmember license. Mike Worthington, 60, of Kake, was cited for employing an unlicensed crewmember. Both were issued bailable citations for $260 and given an optional court appearance date of 7/7/10 in the Juneau District Court.

Sitka gillnetter accused of fishing in closed waters

On 6/22/10 Sitka Wildlife Troopers observed the F/V Sunbeam commercial fishing with a drift gillnet in closed waters outside the Deep Inlet terminal harvest area. Investigation revealed the permit holder was Fabian U. Grutter, 35, of Sitka. Arraignment is set for 7/6/10 in the Sitka District Court.

Hand trollers hook trouble at Ketchikan

Type: Illegal gear, unlicensed crewmember
On 6/19/10 Ketchikan Wildlife Troopers cited Edward Schuyler Stahl III, 20, of Ketchikan, for having an overlimit of commercial hand troll gear aboard a commercial hand troll vessel. Stahl was also cited for having an unlicensed crewmember aboard the vessel that participated in a commercial hand troll fishery. Bail for this offense is set at $260 in the District Court of Ketchikan. There is no bail set for the overlimit of gear charge and a mandatory court appearance is required in the District Court of Ketchikan. Aaron McColley, 19, of Ketchikan, was cited for participating in a commercial fishery without a valid 2010 commercial crewmember's license. Bail for this offense is set at $260 in the District Court of Ketchikan.

On 6/18/10 Caleb Preston, 20, of Girdwood, was cited by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Valdez Post, for commercial fishing his set gillnet within 300 feet of another set gillnet in Main Bay, western Prince William Sound. Preston and another setnetter have been in conflict for over a year, and the investigation involves the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Fish and Game and the Department of Natural Resources. Arraignment scheduled for 7/21/10 in the Cordova District Court.

Charter guide accused of allowing client violations

On 6/9/10 Alaska Wildlife Troopers on board the P/V Enforcer issued a summons to sportfish charter guide William T. Akens, 37, of Summerland, Calif., for allowing clients to commit violations. Investigation showed Akens guided four clients without proper 2010 nonresident sportfish licenses in possession. Akens also was unable to provide for inspection a valid copy of the sportfish charter business license. Arraignment is set for 6/29/10 in the Sitka District Court.

The Dutch Harbor report

From the local police blotter, as reported by the Unalaska Advertiser:

Welfare check, June 6, 1759 hours — Officer checked on a man who called police to tell them that his house should go to the Russian Orthodox Church should he expire sometime in the near future. The man was found to be fine, simply in a state of inebriation.

Harassment, June 6, 2235 hours — An intoxicated man, who had called earlier to provide a verbal will and testimony to police, reported that two men were harassing him at a local bar. Bar personnel told police the story was patently untrue.

Suspicious activity, June 9 — An understandably perturbed caller reported an unidentified person had left a dead raven inside his car.

Lost property, June 11 — Caller reported his cell phone was lost or possibly stolen by a heavyset female smoker in pink pajamas. He later called and reported he had found his phone.

Theft, June 11 — Caller reported his dining table and chairs, which he had left on the beach while he was fishing, had been stolen. A witness saw someone carrying the table towards the local cemetery. Under investigation.

Trespass, June 11 — Officer advised two people they were barred from all UniSea property, per UniSea management.

Suspicious activity, June 12 — Officer contacted two inebriates who were attempting to urinate on a pile of fish containers, and advised them that peeing in public was against local ordinance.

Suspicious activity, June 12 — Woman reported two young boys knocking on doors and offering moose antlers for sale. An officer contacted the boys' parents, who were quite surprised as they were unaware they had any antlers to sell.

Burglary, June 12 — Boat crew reported a television and DVD player had been stolen from the galley sometime in the last four hours. An interested party provided some additional information regarding the theft. Under investigation.

On 6/14/10 Sitka Wildlife Troopers contact Stonie C. Huffman, 37, of Sitka, after observing him transporting commercial crab gear with the M/V Dragon Lady which was not licensed as a commercial fishing vessel. Huffman was cited and required to license the vessel before further transporting pots. Bail was set at $210 in the Sitka District Court.

Unalaska troopers cite crewman lacking license

On 6/15/10 Dutch Harbor Wildlife Troopers issued a citation to Christopher David Sallie, 49, of Montara, Calif., for commercial fishing without possessing his 2010 Alaska commercial fishing crewmember license. Arraignment is scheduled for 6/30/10 in the Unalaska District Court.

State representative hooks $110 ticket

The Alaska State Troopers confirm the person cited in the following case is state Rep. Wes Keller, R-Wasilla.

Keller is vice chairman of the House Special Committee on Fisheries.

Type: Sportfishing with more than one line
On 6/11/10 at approximately 1200 hours, Alaska Wildlife Troopers contacted a 2009 custom aluminum boat near the entrance to Halibut Cove in Kachemak Bay. Investigation revealed the only occupant, Wesley Keller, 64, of Wasilla, was sportfishing with more than one line. Keller was issued a citation for the offense with a fine of $110.

The Dutch Harbor report

From the local police blotter, as reported by the Unalaska Advertiser:

Suspicious activity, May 31 — Officer stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation and found a passenger in possession of tax-exempt cigarettes. The passenger told the officer he had been given the cigarettes by a man who is currently employed on a fishing vessel.

Assault, May 31 — Caller reported a drunken man kicking doors and generally causing problems at a bunkhouse. Investigation revealed that an intoxicated bigot had attempted to start a fight with a person of a different color, and had continued to threaten harm even when taken away by security. The bigot additionally broke a bunk bed, which he had in his misdirected anger begun kicking. Brandon Scott Perkins, 22, of California, was arrested for criminal mischief and assault.

Disorderly conduct, June 2 — A recently terminated UniSea employee caused a ruckus at the Grand Aleutian hotel after his former employers refused to provide him with transportation to the airport. The ex-employee phoned police to report this grave infraction and then accused both his ex-employer and the police of violating his civil rights by failing to provide this service. An officer advised the man he would be arrested if he did not immediately leave UniSea property.

Ambulance request, June 2 — EMS services were requested to transport a patient from a vessel directly to a waiting Coast Guard helicopter.

Assistance rendered, June 3 — Police and harbor coordinated a response to the small-boat harbor, where a man has allegedly been operating an unlicensed, open-air auto repair business.

Assault, June 3 — A quite inebriated man reported he had been assaulted and wanted his assailant arrested. Officers determined that the "victim" had been drinking in a friend's room, began making derogatory statements to the friend and then refused to leave when asked to do so. The victim then threw beer in his friend's face, after which he struck his friend with a full can of beer, causing a beer can-shaped wound on his friend's forehead. The friend, who did not want to press charges, finally punched the victim twice, causing a black eye and bloody nose, after which the victim left with his remaining beer and blood-soaked clothing. Officers explained to the rather irate victim that his friend would not be arrested.

Ambulance request, June 5 — Caller requested an ambulance for a man who had been struck by several cases of frozen fish product.

Domestic disturbance, June 5 — Husband was concerned that his wife might be a danger to herself due to the amount of alcohol she had consumed this evening. Midway through this report, the wife took the phone from him and reported that her dumb husband was cheating on her and sending her hard-earned money to his foreign girlfriend. Officers determined that the couple's marital difficulties had not escalated to a point where further police intervention was required.

On 5/27/10 Cordova Wildlife Troopers observed the F/V Westnet commercial fishing 4.95 nautical miles into closed waters. On 5/28/10 Alexandre Reutov, 24, of Homer, was cited for commercial fishing in closed waters and illegal possession. The F/V Westnet was seized. Arraignment was held in Cordova District Court on 6/4/10, where Reutov pled guilty to the charges. On 6/4/10 the F/V Westnet was returned to Reutov.

Boat reported stolen in Yukon River village

On 6/4/10 Alaska State Troopers responded to the report of a boat theft in Pilot Station. William Alick, 64, reported that persons unknown had stolen his 21-foot aluminum Yukon sometime during the past four weeks. Value of the boat was estimated at $9,000. AST investigation continues.
